Vacation recap

So last week was our family vacation. We went to Silverleaf Fox River Resort about 15 miles from Ottawa IL. I know I was hesitant a few months ago about going there, but we really had a good time (with a few rough patches in the beginning). The resort was nice and we had a two bedroom condo. They had a nice pool and free mini golf course.

We took day trips to the Brookfield Zoo; we spent six hours there and could have easily spent another two, however the kids (and us) were beat. We also went to the children's museum in Naperville (we all had a blast there - so much fun), and Morton Arboretum which has an awesome children's garden.  We stayed at the resort two of the days and went swimming, played games, and relaxed.

I?m not going to lie; it is really tough traveling with two young kids. On more than one occasion TH and I yelled ?We are not going on another family vacation for a really, really long time.?  There were a few times in the beginning, I was ready to pack everything up and head home early, however the fact that we didn?t pay for daycare that week and would have to stay home with the kids anyways kept me from doing that.  Allison was testing her limits and of course Amelia thinks it is funny and tries to follow along.  However once everyone got into their groove, it went much better.

At the end of the trip, we asked the girls what they liked best and Allison said ?golf?. When we asked Amelia, she said ?ummmm?.I liked best?.staying ?home? (condo) and coloring.?  She was really into sitting at the kitchen table and coloring in her new book and playing board games with us. Also on the last night, Allison and I took a night ?hike? around the parking lot and looked at the stars. She held my hand as we walked and that completely made up for all the bad moments.

Re: Vacation recap

  • Thank you for sharing! The night hike is so sweet.

  • Aww! I'm glad it ended well.

Why not try a "night hike" at home now and then, too?

Jonathan still remembers when his dad would come get him (or his brothers, depending whose turn it was) out of bed to do something special, just the two of them.

  • yeah for family vacation. That is something that we (dh,ss & i) haven't been able to do. :(

  • Glad to hear that you had a nice time overall!
  • Glad you guys had a good time overall :)

  • I think it's great how you prioritize vacationing with the girls, even though it's hard.  My aunt used to live in Chicago when I was younger and we would often visit Brookfield Zoo.  That place is great!

    I second this.

We had every intention on bringing T to Florida with us in October, but plans have changed and he's staying with grandma that week instead.

And when we booked our trip to Myrtle Beach, we specifically said that would be a kid free trip.  But since he's not going to Florida with us, we're taking him to MB instead.  I'm very excited about this, but I also know how hard it can be (we definitely had some non-fun moments in Boston!)

Glad you had an overall nice trip, MB!

Thanks! Its one of those things that  we lucked out in the begining and were able to use my CW timeshare. Having a condo makes all the difference in the world. Staying at a hotel for that long would be very hard. The first two trips with the girls went great, so we got in the mind grame that we will be doing something special each year.

Having adults only vacations are just as important too. In fact, next year we were going to go to Sesame Place in PA next year, however we decided to go back to the place we just stayed and use the money we save towards a long weekend for just the two of us so I can hit up another baseball park.
