There's a company that I do occasional work for as an independent contractor. They sent me a check back on 6/17 for $175.55, and because I had to mail it to my bank (USAA, I've since opened an account elsewhere for this reason), it got lost in the mail, along with a check from my parents. I've done everything I can think of to find it, but it's a lost cause.
I had the hardest time initially even getting info from this company on whether the check was cashed (in case it was stolen). I literally had to contact the owner's son to get involved, as the payroll lady just would not return my calls/emails, and was conveniently always on the other line when I called. Of course, he got the ball rolling, but still defended her. Over a month after my initial request, I finally got her on the phone, and she emailed me back that it hadn't been cashed. I emailed her back immediately and asked her to reissue the check (minus a $30 stop payment fee of couse). I never received any kind of response.
I sent another email this morning, and will follow up with a call as soon as their offices open, but WWYD? I'm beyond frustrated with this situation! I know it's not a ton of money, but I feel like I'm being yanked around because of that. Most contractors that work for them get small checks like this, and it's just so horribly unprofessional. I know there's a forum online for contractors who work in this industry to report payment issues with companies, but I've not wanted to bad-mouth them because I truly have enjoyed working for the company until now. I'm just not sure what else I can do other than keep pestering them.
Re: WWYD re: paycheck issue
I wouldn't do anymore work for them. I think you may be SOL regarding the check.
Good luck!
