Best option for video chat?

Hi all,

Now that I'm pregnant, apparently I'm much more interesting and my mom wants to set up video chatting. Is Skype the best option? I actually don't mind paying for something if it's better. Is there anything I should buy? I do love gadgets...

I kind of hate the idea of video chatting since I tend to wash the dishes or straighten up while I'm on the phone but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

Thanks all!

Re: Best option for video chat?

  • Hey, I use skype with my fianc? and his family, if you have a good connection it works pretty good and it's for free, so even better (at least for me).  And I'm teaching my mom how to use it, so my parents will be able to video chat with me, when I move. Hope it helps :)

  • I use gchat's video function. It typically works great, and it's free as well.
  • I've only ever used Skype, but it is fairly easy to use and even my technology-inhibited mom can use it with relative ease.

    Can't beat free.

  • Another vote for Skype!

  • Another skype user here too!  And if whoever you're talking to is fine with it you can still do the dishes or fold laundry or whatever while talking...it's just more difficult when you have to get up or leave the room because you'd have to excuse yourself instead of just carrying the phone.  I do that when just talking to my mom though.  :)

  • I use skype video chat almost exclusively, pretty much every day.  My mom and sister like Facetime app on iPodTouch/iPhone/iPad.
  • I use skype regularly and have also recently been using google plus for work video chats which has also been working well!

  • I used to use gmail chats until I got skype. For us, the video quality on skype is a lot better and the video almost never freezes.

  • I used to use Messenger, but I that Skype is better. Just make sure you get a good camera. We have one with a built in mike and quite like that. I think ours is a Logitech one.
