Makeup Question - Foundation
How in the world do you pick out the correct foundation from the over the counter type brands of makeup? You know, Almay, Covergirl, etc? Bottles are sealed, so how do you find the right color for you?
And is the pricey name brand foundations really any better, (Lancome, Clinique, etc).
I use Mary Kay right now and the color is just getting too light for me. But I don't want to have to deal with that any more. And I hate buying a bottle of foundation from the store and then it not be the right color and you are out the $$$
Suggestions?

Re: Makeup Question - Foundation
I went to the Estee Lauder counter with my Mom last summer when she was buying new foundation. They were giving out 10-day samples of foundations while there, so I figured why not. The sales woman took her time matching different foundations and colors until we found a foundation that looked just right and felt good on my skin. I was really pleased with how it looked at the end of the day too, I still had some on. After seeing some pictures of myself with that new make-up on I was sold. I will never go cheap again, I threw away way too much money that way & was never happy.
This. I've been an Origins foundation fan for the last 12 years. I love it. It really isn't all that much more pricey than the non-makeup counter brands. It is very lightweight. My BFF has been a store brand foundation user forever and she tried mine and was amazed at the difference in feel.
They will match it up for you. Once you get matched, you can even order online.
I used MAC before I started using Laura Mercier and my skin broke out horribly - in areas where it previously did not. I know a lot of people with sensitive skin have problems with MAC. Then again, I know quite a few people who love MAC and don't have a problem with it at all.
I still love their eyeshadows and lip gloss, though. I just can't use any of their foundation and blush products.
I tried MakeUpForEver & fell in love. I use the Mat Velvet, it is so light weight, and smooth. Also it blends into skin beautifully, no lines!
Go to Sephora and they will match you. I think you should always get matched every single time when buying a foundation. Your skin tone can change season to season.
With the new stuff I'm using now, I went to Sephora and they matched me. My face is horribly broken out right now. I am actually using Laura Mercier in a compact, but it's more like a mineral powder. I love it. Gives me enough coverage without being heavy.

I have pretty sensitive skin, and I always had issues with MAC foundation as well. I finally tried one they used to make called Select Tint, which was somewhere in between a tinted moisturizer and a light foundation. They discontinued it a couple of years ago, and I loved it so much, I went on eBay and found some in my color, and stocked up on it. (4 bottles is as much as I could find.) I will be very sad when I run out. They do have a tinted moisturizer now, though--I wonder if that is similar in terms of gentleness.
I use MAC and have for years with no problems. My only issue w/ foundation in general is I am so pale that every thing looks dark on me.
They say to spend money on skin care products and foundations, and go cheap on the eye shadows and blushes. But I am happier going expensive on those to be sure I get the color right. I quit trying to buy makeup at grocery stores/pharmacies a few years ago because I was always frustrated with the color. The only thing I will buy there is mascara. Otherwise, I go to Sephora so I can try on the makeup first. It may be more expensive, but I never end up buying something I don't want.
I love the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, but I noticed it was irritating my skin after using for a week. I still buy it, but only wear it when I go out for a formal event.
I finally came across Clinque's Superbalanced Powder. It evens out my skin and I rarely break out from it unless I fail to wash my face before going to bed.
