Mel and anyone else who uses Good Reads

So I am really trying to be better about reading.  I finished House Rules in less than a week while on vacation (record speed for me) and now am reading The Help, with Water For Elephants on deck in my Nook.

I am wondering how this Good Reads site works.  Is it book sharing for e-readers?  The book I want to read after Water for Elephant is called Love You, Mean It... it's a memoir by 9/11 widows.  B&N doesn't have it available as a Nook Book but it looks like it's on Good Reads.

Can anyone explain how the site works?

Re: Mel and anyone else who uses Good Reads

  • Sorry, but goodreads is not a place to get ebooks.  (More on that in a moment).  It is a place to keep track of books you have read and want to read.  It is basically a FB for books and people who read.  I just use goodreads to track how far along I am in books and to keep track of books I want to read because with GR friends, you can see what they read and get ideas/recommendations.

As for your Nook, does your local library have ebooks on Overdrive?  I never buy books for my Nook, I get them all from the library.  I would look into this.  Also, you can get a library card online from the Free Library of Philadelphia.  Since you are out of state, there is a small fee ($15 maybe?).

Let me know if you have other questions about this.  Feel free to play on my GR page.

  • I like good reads mostly because it allows me to keep track of books I want to read without losing the million paper lists or notes I used to make for myself. When I hear about a book  from a friend, magazine, etc, I can just log on to goodreads and add the book to my 'to-read' shelf, and when I get to the library I bring the list up using the internet on my phone.

This is exactly why I signed up for it. I could never remember all the books that I wanted to read and now I have them all stored in one spot that I can easily pull up.

This is what I use it for too.  I also like looking through others bookshelves.  I've found a lot of great books that way.

  • Okay, thanks girls!  Sorry to plst and run yesterday... we didn't get our power back until 5:30 last night (was posting on my "lunch break" at my mom's house) and were out in the yard cleaning up from Irene from about 3 until 8 PM.  I am so sore today!

Anywho, thanks for the tips on Good Reads/Phildelphia Library. I think the Philly Library was the one I was thinking of for book sharing on e-readers.  Not sure if our local library does lending that way, but I'll have to look into it.  And I might have to make a Good Reads account :)

  • Have you tried searching for book lending sites for the Nook?  I have a Kindle and there are quite a few of them out there for the Kindle so I assume the same is for the Nook.  Not all books can be loaned out though.  Try googling something like "Nook Book Lending" and see what comes up.

Oh, and Goodreads is an awesome site.  It's so useful in remembering what books I want to read and also fun for seeing stats and stuff on the books I've already read.
