Question about fabrics and heat
For gifts this year I'm going to make a bunch of lavender sachets and also some of those homemade heating pads filled with cherry pits. I wanted to use some sort of luxurious, satiny or silky fabrics if possible but I'm worried about how they'll withstand heat. I'd like for folks to be able to use the sachets in the clothes dryer if they wish, and for the heating pads to (obviously) be made for the microwave.
Anyone have experience with this? Anything I can use other than plain cotton that will be sturdy but soft?
Re: Question about fabrics and heat
Sorry I'm not of more help, but I've only done the heating pads with cottons. Someone suggested to me to layer terry cloth or a towel inside/behind the cotton fabric - I can't remember why, though. I don't really work with other fabrics besides cottons/jerseys! Good luck!
And, what do you use the cherry pits for? Pits vs rice?
Thanks, it's good to know about the terry cloth. Maybe it's so you can remove the outer covering to wash if necessary?
I got the cherry pits idea from the Martha Stewart site. According to comments there I've gathered three advantages:
1. Rice can attract bugs
2. cherry pits hold some moisture and moist heat is better for you
3. supposedly it's safe to put in the clothes washer, whereas you wouldn't want to do that with rice.
