Ok...now what?

I dropped F at school this morning.  So far I have changed the bed/washed the sheets, vacuumed the house, took the cats to the vet and I am bored.  This is only day one.

So, if you had free time for yourself during the day, what would you do with it?  I am not a spa/mani-pedi person.  Bonus points if it is free/cheap.  Volunteer?

ETA: for the first time ever I contemplated asking my old job about part-time work...

Re: Ok...now what?

  • this is me during the summers (dd still goes to daycare).

the key is to pace yourself on stuff around the house and errands. i also make myself go work out each day, which is a good way to kill an hour.

  • Sounds like a good problem to have! (I know it would be boring day after day.)

What about correspondance? Do you have any family members or friends that are geographically distant that you could send a little card or letter to?

Crafting would be high on my list if I didn't have so much housework, schoolwork, etc. to do. I would get a head start on making some cute gifts for Christmas. Pinterest is a good place for ideas!

Cooking is another project... make ahead freezer meals, labor intensive sauces, etc, or make freezer meals/soups for friends/family with new babies, sick/elderly, etc.

Volunteering is also great. I would love to spend a morning or afternoon at the animal shelter... but there are tons of opportunities for people of all interests!

  • Yep, I hit the gym every morning for an hour or so (sometimes I do 2 classes, other times I sit for coffee with friends). By the time I'm done it's usually almost time to pick up DD2, but I may squeeze in some errands or household tasks. I also volunteer at DD1's school quite a bit, and occasionally at a local church.

ETA:  Oddly, I thought I'd have tons of free time on my hands but after all the kids stuff, volunteer work, household stuff, and errands I still find myself short on time to do personal hobby type things. Perhaps if I were a better time manager (i.e. not on the nest right now).... LOL

  • Scrapbook?  Find a good book?  Organize things?  Learn something new (sewing, crocheting, photography)?
  • What kind of time do you have?

If everything is done around the house, I'd use it as a perfect excuse to catch up the DVR/movies.

  • I work during MDO time, but I also love to have lunch with friend.  I also do all my personal appointments, hair cut, doctor, dentist, etc.  I do also do any shopping for myself (clothes, shoes, house stuff).  I also do grocery shopping.

I find MDO a great time to also have people come do stuff at the house (repairs, projects, etc) because the kids are out of the way and I don't have to worry about watching them like a hawk.

I also do things that make big messes I don't want the kids getting into.  Emptying closets, drawers, etc.  Cleaning out files, shredding, organizing tax document.

    Yard work

    Pay bills

Couponing!!!!  I do most of that kid free, so much easier without 2 kids grabbing at the shelves

My kids don't nap anymore.  There is no other point in time that I get a minute to myself.

  • This is just me, of course, but I would volunteer at the animal shelter and start training for my full ironman. Big Smile

Maybe you can check out what books are at the library?

  • I hear ya.  I seriously have been off of work for one week.  Our nanny is still here because it's not fair to ask her to take a month off (and she's totally awesome and loves our kids).

Today I went to the mall.  I went to Walmart.  I went to Target.

I seriously couldn't do this once my kids were in school full time.  So glad I go back to work in 3 weeks.

  • Have another baby? ;) LOL I could fill three years with the unfinished chores & projects in my house. What a fun problem to have, I'm fantasizing about free time now.
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.

  • LOL!  I love the "have another baby" comments.

I just started volunteering at the Beacon downtown and had a great time.  You can either assist with serving food or doing laundry for the homeless.  It's not glamorous, but the people are so much fun.  They are open on Friday - Monday, if you ever want to volunteer.

Would you want to help my foundation throw a wine tasting fundraiser?  That could totally eat up hours of your time off.  ;)

If you are sick of volunteering (you already do a lot), then you should definitely add workouts to the day.  That is an easy way to kill off 2 hours between working out, and cleaning up.

  • When I am off for the summers I go hog wild on my house. I move stuff around, re-decorate, recover chairs, do some of the 8,000 projects I have hiding in closets, go dig for vintage (to find more unfinsihed projects for said closets), plant things (if it ever gets cooler) etc.

I also nap like a champ.

  • That pic of her is absolutely adorable!

I'd read, exercise, volunteer, re-organize something.  In all truthfulness, I would probably roam for hours in junk/antique shops.

If you could commit to a particular day and time every week, that would be an amazing help to a child. You could sit and read with that child every week, giving him or her some one-on-one time that he or she doesn't get at home and desperately needs.

  • take some leisure learning classes. i would sew my brains out making a quilt of maddie's baby clothes, creating scrap books of her cherished art work at school, i would write this book that has been in my head for a long time, etc.  i would also get the rosetta stone and pick Mandarin up again, especially since the Chinese will own this country when F is an adult. and i would take up piano lessons.
