So I was totally laughing that NYC was exaggerating as always about Irene. My friends were posting crazy comments and I was thinking how the NYC authorities were making people panic.
Yesterday, my parents, DH and I were driving down from Canada home, and we were literally 30 minutes from home when the highway that we used was closed off for flooding. It was 7:44pm when we started trying every possible road to get back home and it was just not happening. All of the major and even minor roads were blocked either for flooding, or fallen trees or broken power lines. We saw a huge power box, the one that hangs on the poles (not sure the real name of it) explode right in front of our car. Every possible road in any direction was closed. Finally at 11:30pm we decided to stop to sleep at a local high school that opened a shelter. They had food and American Cross cots and blankets. It was all unreal - if you looked at the parking lot, all of the cars parked there were luxury cars. There was one woman sleeping on a cot hugging her Coach bag. Surreal. Thank God for this school because all of the hotels within 30 miles were either full or you couldn't get to them.
I cannot believe that this happened to us, and so many people on their ways home. We saw homes flooded and ones with trees on their lawns, or roofs. When the power line exploded I broke down and started sobbing behind the wheel but no one could replace me because DH was reading the directions to me from his Google maps. My parents would not be good following his directions. I have to somehow share the map of our area frm last night - all red lines and closed roads. It was so scary.
I hope you are all OK after this storm? Have any stories of your own?
Re: Irene hit us
How scary! I am so glad you are OK and had a place to stay last night.
Have a great week.
The house is doing fine, though it took us a few crazy roads to get back there.
@aweilba- I am sorry for your godparents. I hope they have all the essentials to get through to Wednesday or later.
My good friend's power went down, the whole town lost it and a few towns around, the ETA for the fix is September 4. She just had a baby girl too, I can't imagine how hard this must be for her.
