WR: Update

The superintendent actually called the school Friday to let me know something came up, but he still planned to attend. He showed up at about 10:25 and stayed a little more than an hour. During that time, he saw some of the behavior issues I deal with, how unreasonable it is for me to wear dresses (or dress clothes in general), how much teachers spend of their own money in their classrooms/on the their kids, and the time consuming assessment system that we use. He was full of questions, and we discussed some of the issues we see with how things work including the pay cut we've gotten even though children were added to our classes. He talked over my students' head, but spoke to them as a group a couple times (I had to play translator). Once he figured out that I was having to make his language kid friendly, he did do better of attempting to talk on their level. He did mention that we had all impressed him even in the short time he was there and that he wants to return. He even asked us to do a song again so that he could do the dance with my kids!

Overall, it was successful even though I refused to put on a dog and pony show just because he was there. (Hell, it's a dog and pony show in my room regularly without an audience!!!) Thank you ladies for your support!!

Re: WR: Update

  • I'm glad he got to see some of the realities you deal with every day and how the decisions he makes impact the people like you in the classroom. Sounds like it was a really good visit!

  • I am so glad he came and saw your hard work.  People really don't understand something until they try to put themselves in their shoes.

  • You know I've been rooting for you!  I'm so glad it went well.  I really hope that change comes out of this.

You were so brave to set this in motion, by the way.  I don't think I'd have the guts to make that email.

  • Sounds like it went great - good for you!
  • I felt so bad for you when he didn't show up. Glad he did and actually made an effort to be involved while he was there Smile. It sounds like he had no idea what actually goes on in teacher's classrooms (at least at the younger level), and hopefully can now make more informed decisions. Way to go!
