Words of Wisdom

Would anyone care to give me some? H and I are both having our wisdom teeth out next week and I'm trying to plan IE getting soft comfort foods, cheap pillow cases so we don't stain ours stocking up on good movies and trashy mags. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Re: Words of Wisdom

  • follow doc's orders about not using straw to drink, etc. get some soup to eat. I got a dry socket and it wasn't as bad as i thought it'd be...but it certainly wasn't fun. the post-surgery recovery isn't bad at all...i went to work the next day. good luck!

  • Stock up on ibuprofen.  I developed a dry socket and the good drugs couldn't touch the pain.  Ibuprofen is what the dentist recommended.  Be sure to clean out any food that may get stuck in there.  The curved syringe they gave me was super nice.

I was knocked out for mine, and it was nice to have H taking care of me.  A friend stopped by with a balloon and some small Frostys.  That was super special.

  • Take the pain killers and follow the doctors orders! They had to cut into my gums to get them out, so mine was really painful. I wasn't functional for a few days. I don't remember anything other than it hurt.
  • I also had dry socket - I wasn't informed of the straw, and my mother had me drinking soup from a straw the afternoon I was home. I was miserable and doped up on pain meds. It was a horrible experience for me that could have been avoided, I think. I couldn't open my mouth or chew normally for 8 months. Get foods that are easy - pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes. Take your pain meds before you start to feel pain.

I really hope you aren't getting them done at the same time. I would advise against that.

  • oh man i wish i had a better story to tell after the above. well i just got an organ removed from my body today and would choose that over wisdom. i had four impacted done all at once. actually was ok but terrible stomach that i have i had the worst nausea of my life. like i was crying and no joke could understand why people committed suicide from pain (but in my case it was just this sickening nausea. the first day i projectile vomited blood all over my freshly painted bedroom wall. after a couple of nights of this nausea i finally called the doctor in the middle of the night. turns out it was the antibiotic which makes sense cuz it would be worse after i took it. i have a friend who went through the same nausea after getting her teeth out. she is in her 60s so she had lots of life experience and babies and said it was the worst thing she ever went through. so yeah... that prob wont happen to you but it was horrible. my friend said that they give you really bad anesthesia in there that's legal for doing in an office and that's why some people get so sick. i am not sure if thats true though. i did worry about dry socket but i don't think i got that - it's been some time. i couple of things i learned after - you might get very emotional after the anesthesia. i did when i woke up from my wisdom teeth and did today too. it is normal. also different from those above i was told at the offi e to eat non dairy soft foods which was annoying cuz we had bought pudding etc. so you might want jello, popsicles and broth as options. also annoying is the stupid cotton they put in your mouth. eventually they take it out and sometimes there are roots left like in my case which is kind of gross.
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • i should add my experience probably wasnt normal and while the tooth pain was bad it wasnt intolerable, just annoying. they give you vicodin and like suzy said it's good to stay ahead of the pain ie take it before its bad so then you arent really uncomfortable waiting for it to work. also strongly advise not to do it at the same time unless you have someone staying with you like a mom type. you need someone to take care of you amd not someone who just went through it too. not to mention neither of you will be able to drive home. in my case my mom flew out from california and i honestly dont know what i would have done without her. at the time h and i didnt live together but he stayed over a lot. he was no help though so i asked him to go home.

  • Were having them done in the office I work in by a phenominal doctor, so I'm comfortable with that and fortunately I know all the risks and post op instructions etc. H is having his done on that Thurs and being knocked out. I'm having mine done Friday just under local anesthetic. I'm sure they'll prescribe something good for pain, and if it causes nausea etc then we can get a new script easily. I'm going to try to avoid dairy and get the curved syringes for flushing the sockets. Thanks girls these were all good points and by all means keep em coming!

  • Good luck to you both!

I had mine out several years ago-- it was no big deal.  I will say I didn't do well with the pain=killers--- they made me feel worse than the pain, if that makes sense.  But that's typically my body's reaction to heavy drugs, so might just be me.

I went light on food for about 2days, but honestly, I wasn't really that hungry, so even that wasn't too bad.

    Again, GL!

  • I would space that out a little more if I were you. Having you both down seems like it would be the hardest part.

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was in college in the middle of my hard core party stage. They had to give me so much stuff to knock me out based on my weight. The dentist/nurse kept waiting for me to go to sleep and I didn't. I guess they finally gave me so much that it knocked my a$$ out for like a day straight. My dad had to carry me out of the office though the back door because they said I was so pale and sickly looking that anyone in the front office would have freaked.

I don't remember any bad pain, but I did barf up some jello and that hurt. I do know that I took the very minimal amount of pain pills like I do with any surgery and I felt like that helped me to perk up pretty quickly. I'd rather have some pain than be all groggy.

  • I'd be worried about the time between your surgeries too.  I'm a lightweight when it comes to being put under so it takes me days to get back to normal.  I don't know what I'd do if H were down at the same time.

All of the advice above is great though.  Good luck.

  • I agree with pp's: follow your Dr's orders and you should be okay!
