WWYD? Wildlife

You're driving at night and spot a teeny, tiny, baby skunk stumbling in the middle of the road, in peril of being run over. What do you do?[Poll]

Re: WWYD? Wildlife

  • If I have C I'd keep driving.  On my own I would proabbly stop and try to get off road...do baby skunks spray?  If they spray I'd move on =)

  • Why is this an IPI?  (usually that means Inappropriate Poll Inside - to warn others in case they would be offended or to pique the curiousity of the morbidly curious!  lol).

I would probably keep driving - depends, I guess.  If I was on a road going 50 mph - I would keep going, if I was in my neighborhood going 20 mph, I might stop and help it to the side.

    Yes, they do.  Keep moving.

  • I was actually relieved that there was no IPI regarding wildlife.

This, if it were pretty much any other animal besides a skunk I'd probably take it home.  I'm a sucker.  I took a teeny baby squirrel to the wildlife rescue place by my house last year.  DH was all freaked out about the germs and DS and I was sobbing great big new-mama tears over the little hairless thing.   hahaha

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.

Oops, I'm a dope...I thought IPI meant "interactive poll inside"...clicky vs. just written responses. My mistake!!

I wasn't sure, either, so I looked up some info. Yes, skunks are born with the ability to spray, but unlike adult skunks, babies don't yet have the oils in their glands that make the scent adhere. Also, instead of the liquid spray, babies put out more of a "whiff" of odor that's more gas-like and dissipates in the air.

  •  So I was driving home last night from a friend's house and saw this little guy stumbling in the middle of the usually-busy road:

     image

I kept driving but then turned around and went to see if I could just move him off the road.  He was so little he couldn't get up over the curb of the median! As I pulled to the side a truck came by and came so close to running over the little fella it sent him rolling. He was so tiny it was clear he was too small to be on his own....his mama may have been hit by a car in the same area.  I didn't want to just leave him to the side of the road since it was likely he'd just wander back out there. We live on a greenbelt so I figured I could maybe release him back there. Using a towel I had in the car I draped it over him and scopped him into a large shopping bag and took him home.

At first, DH was not happy....told me to get it out of here. But after watching him for a few minutes he thought it was super cute and even woke the girls so they could see it. He took this pic (and added the pen to show scale):

I did a little research and determined the skunk was still too young (~4 wks old) to survive on its own so I put it in a cat carrier with the towel and some food/water and put it out back for the night. Made some calls this morning to wildlife rescue network and will be meeting a lady this afternoon who will take care of him until he's old enough to be released. :)

  • What a cute little skunk!  I am so glad this story had a happy ending!  I am a volunteer at one of the Wildlife Centers and know how much care the little bitty ones need. Thanks for pulling over and giving him a second chance! :o
