bucks, nola, anyone who might have diy'd hardwood floors

i think bucks and her h did them and i was thinking with all your reno after katrina you might have too nola... i am thinking about doing my master bedroom and an adjoining small hallway. how much of a pain are we in for? is it really a cost savings to diy? did you rent a saw from hd? did you have to put down a subfloor (we had to have that done with tile in the master bath)? any other considerations? also did you do a pergo type or hardwood? we have pergo downstairs (came with the house). it's pretty maintenance free but i would consider wood too.

Re: bucks, nola, anyone who might have diy'd hardwood floors

  • When we first moved into our house we put pergo flooring down in one bedroom.  The lady that lived in the house before us let her cats destroy the carpet in that room so it had to go.  We did it ourselves and it took us about 2 days.  We didn't need to put any subfloor underneath it.  It was actually pretty easy to do.  It was the kind that snaps together on the edges.  We also rented a saw and it made making the cuts so much easier.

Then about 2 years ago we paid someone to put hardwood into our living room and hallways.  He charged 1.25 per square foot to lay it on top of what we paid for the wood (about $3 a square foot).  We didn't want to attempt to put the hardwood down since it gets nailed down.

Personally, I love the look of our hardwood much better than the pergo.  We're saving to have hardwood put into the other rooms now.

  • thank you! that's good info! another question - do you have a house? my h's dad just told me we could borrow his jigsaw and he just did it and at the end of the convo he said, "so when are we gonna do this?" so it would be awesome if he and h could do it and could leave me out of it!

  • I *think* it was a table saw that we rented.  When you buy the flooring they should be able to tell you the best tools to use.  Whatever you use, you just want to make sure you get really straight cuts.  We put that floor down about 6 years ago so I'm having a hard time remembering all of the details.  :)

That would be great if they did it though and you could stay out of it.  lol...Although, I love projects like that.

  • ok so, we put down laminate in the condo. it's relatively easy if you have someone there to show you how to start. the hardest part are the cuts around corners, doorways, etc. it was all lock and click and starting it sucked...everytime we clicked in a new piece, the other one would come out. it was almost comical..but not really. but, we got it done and love the look for the price...it's a condo so we weren't going to throw the money of HW floors into it...we would never get that money back. let me know if you need to know more about laminate!

  • i think you make a good point bucks. i was thinking the same since we have a townhome. my realtor once told me when i asked about adding plantation shutters that really the people moving in here will be coming from an apartment and won't be expecting high end finishes. i probably would do the laminate too. i just have to break the news to h that he has a project in his future :-)

  • We have what is called "engineered" hardwood.  It's not laminate but not full-on hardwood...??  I don't know the specifics, I just let J take control on it when he did it back in 2007.  It was about or less than $3.00 a square foot in 2007.  I do know it's teak, tho, and I love love love it.  I love the variation of color from plank to plank.  It's not totally uniform so it adds a lot of character.

Anyway, we didn't do a subfloor.  Just laid the waterproof layer thing down and our planks fit together like the laminate does - just snapped together.  Glued it all down as well.  I don't thoroughly understand the difference between hardwood and engineered hardwood, but I guess one thing is that it's not as thick??  We can sand it down if we ever need to and refinish it like regular hardwood, and it certainly is delicate (scratches fairly easy).  But I wouldn't trade it for laminate, ever.

But like what Bucks said - know your market.  Would hardwood be considered a frivolous upgrade or would you get a good return on it?  I mean, if you're at all concerned about that.  For us, for example, we opted for laminate (laminate HD) counter tops in the kitchen instead of granite given our neighborhood.  It just wouldn't have offered a great return for us to splurge on the granite unless either of us really really wanted it just for us.  We probably could have gotten away with laminate flooring as well to be honest, but neither of us like laminate and since WE are living here for now WE wanted to enjoy hardwood (tho our budget didn't allow for more than the "engineered" stuff).
