pre-deployement stress

I've known about my husband's orders for the last 7 months.  I have been preparing myself and making plans, getting into school, I work full time. I am training for a half marathon, losing weight and I have to ton of health and fitness goals.  I am getting back into school, I am moving back in with my family (we have no children and are doing this to save a lot of money).  My family is amazing and they will give me the space that I need and will be there to support me when I do need it.  Its getting close to him leaving and now panic is starting to set it.  My anxiety level is off the charts.  I am so scared.  I thought I was tough enough to go through this, but its really hitting home that in 8 weeks, he will be on a plane to Korea.  (one year unaccompanied tour btw).  We plan to meet in hawaii during his midtour and then go on a few small trips while he is home since I cannot take a whole month off of work and school.

How do you all deal with this anticipation?  I am pretty sure I will be okay once he is gone, but the build up to him leaving is driving me crazy.

Also, I have heard that there is a way that I can get through security so that I can be with him until his planes leaves. (he is flying commercially)  Is this true? And if so is there anything I need to do in advance?

If any of you have any words of advice I would love to hear it.  Thanks for your time.

Re: pre-deployement stress

  • First, Korea is not exactly considered a deployment. Second, when your husband checks in at the airport, kindly let the airline people know that he's leaving and they'll issue you a "ticket" that allows you to get to the gate waiting area. And I think you're on the right track with keeping busy and having goals for yourself, that's really great! Once he gets there and you know he's safe, I'm sure you'll be fine. You can communicate with him easily while he's there using phone cards so just hearing from him will help pass the time. GL!

  • Are you stressed because you're worried about being lonely or about him being "deployed"?  If it's the latter, don't worry.  It's Korea.  Other than people drinking too much and hanging with too many juicies, there really aren't any dangers.

If it's the former, you'll get through it, especially with how you're planning.  You can go visit probably any time you want.  Use all that money you're saving for plane tickets.  I lived in Korea for 5 months when H was there (yes, they'll switch BAH for you even if not sponsored).  It was boring, but it was great to be together since we'd already spent 9 months before Korea living in different countries.  It was boringashell where we were, so I wouldn't recommend it for most people, but long visits I definitely recommend.

  • I think it sounds like you are pretty busy and that is always a plus. I am in the same boat as you regarding an upcoming deployment.. When it gets near the time when my DH is getting ready to leave, we sometimes have dumb arguments because of stress. Just try to extend your patience with this whole process and stay as busy as you can. Do things that you want to do and just take it one day at a time..
