AW: Hooray for vacay! - southern beach recs please

With me leaving my job 6 weeks ago we didn't think we'd do much in the way of a vacation this year, but as it turns out, friends asked if we'd like to stay with them for a few days of their OBX rental, and then Otto's work trip to Charleston finally came through for shortly after, so starting tomorrow we get a leisurely 10-day vacation, at least half of which will be subsidized (friends in OBX, O's work, and relatives in Myrtle Beach).

We're good for the OBX, but if you have any "must-see" recommendations for Wilmington, NC, Myrtle Beach, or Charleston, I welcome them and thank you in advance!

Re: AW: Hooray for vacay! - southern beach recs please

  • Yay! I am no expert on any of those places, but we did a day trip to Wilmington a few summers ago when my brother was living nearby and it was lovely. We just walked around and saw all the old houses (Bellamy Mansion was a nice tour) and the water. Unfortunately it was 100 something degrees and I was super pregnant, otherwise we would have done more. I'm sure DCtoLow and QueSrah will have something to say about Charleston.
  • With regards to Charleston, I have a manual. dctolowcountry at gmail. Fire away. Are you looking to stay downtown or at the beach proper?

  • no recs but yay for an unexpected vacation!!

  • Awesome!

If you'll be in Charleston, I highly recommend taking a side trip to Savannah/Tybee Island.  Tybee was recently rehabed and is apparently quite nice now (we left during the rebuilding process.)  And Savannah is just great!

Let me know if you want more information/recs!

  • We were in Charleston for some unusually cold weather last year (snow and palm trees are an odd combo), so didn't get to do as much as we'd like.  DCtoLow definitely has good information, so take her up on her offer :)

  • Charleston is one of my all time favorite cities - so much to do, beautiful weather, and just a gorgeous place to visit. Definitely check out Market street for an "Old South" experience, and King St. for some awesome shopping and dining. There are lots of beaches but many are public access so get there early to avoid driving around all day looking for a spot - Folly beach is great and has shops and restaurants, but is definitely one of the more popular spots tourist-wise. Have fun!!!!

  • Do you mind my asking where your OBX rental is? Ours in Frisco is still without electricity and we'd have to take a ferry there (the one road to Hatteras Island is completely ruined), assuming we can go next week at all. *pout* Midgett (our rental company) canceled all houses this week. Hope yours is faring better!! We might look for a backup property further north, but it's doubtful we'll find anything available and dog-friendly.

Not trying to be a downer. Enjoy your well-deserved vacay!

  • I was born in Wilmington and still have family there so I am slightly biased but I think that Wrightsville is one of the best NC beaches :-) Also, there are non-beach things to do too. The historic district is really nice and there are a bunch of great restaurants and shopping.

  • Schydukes - we're in Duck with Sun Realty. It's my friends renting it - they said the company was in close contact with them and kept them posted on whether or not their house would be OK as of today when the town officially re-opened to visitors. So with the thumbs-up, they drove down today and said things are generally OK and their rental is fine. They're hoping they'll be able to extend their stay since they were supposed to start their rental Saturday.

  • I'm so jealous your going to my hometown.

I grew up on James Island -- either way --

do you have any children ? ( if its not in the siggy, I don't remember )

I love doing the " adult " ghost tour -- tells where all the brothels were and crazy stuff about murderers and things.

do you like seafood ? September is the first month for local seafood

if you want a fancy night you could go to High Cotton, Fig, Magnolia or Slightly North of Broad ( Snob )

  • I've been going to Myrtle since I was a wee one because I have family there, but most of it is just uber touristy. They have a lot of attractions (including a recently re-opened Pavilion) but I can't say I've been to any of them in recent years. We always make a point to eat at Carolina Roadhouse when we're in town though - never had a disappointing meal! Less touristy are the areas of Calabash and Pawley's Island. In Wilmington I know there's the battleship you can tour, but don't know much else.

And if you are super animal lovers who don't mind getting dirty, I know of a very rural, poor shelter about an hour away from the beach in Mullins that can always use extra hands during the day. :)

Thanks, muppet! I'll look into Sun. MIL said Twiddy had no dog-friendly, smoke-free rentals (at least in our price range) available for next week in the northern beaches. Of course, we can't book until ours is for sure canceled... aargh.

p.s. thank you thank you! Sun seems to have some available.
