I just found out that a college classmate of mine was killed by the hurricane. He wasn't someone I knew well at all, but we had several friends in common. So sad.

I'm so sorry to hear that. A high school classmate of mine was killed during the blizzards last year, and while I hadn't seen him since high school, it was still tough to deal with. For me, I think part of it is coming to terms with someone our age dying and I wonder at one point it is no longer as tragic or shocking (e.g. at 86, almost all of my grandmother's close friends have passed away, and they no longer have enough classmates left for reunions) - which is pretty sad in and of itself.
On another note, it really irks me to hear the commentary about how Irene was blown out of proportion - obviously the friends and family of your classmate and the other people who lost their lives in Irene would not view this storm as overhyped.
