are you prepared for last minute guests?

i totally forgot that SIL will be in town for the long weekend, and I was talking to step-MIL last night about it so we could coordinate some family meals. I generally food shop once a week, on Sundays. So there's not a ton left by the weekend...I kept saying that it was fine for me to host whatever, whenever - that i'd make it work. I think she was surprised by it. But often in the last year, my other SIL would call me at 4 to tell me she was in the neighborhood and I'd invite her to dinner with us and i wasn't even home yet cooking it, and believe me, i wasn't stopping at the supermarket either.

i always have something to stretch out a meal. i usually have frozen spinach artichoke dip and always have tortilla chips or pita chips on hand. i can always put out carrots and dressing for dip. i can extend any meal by serving a little less meat per person or switching Ava's meal to frozen nuggets and giving her portion to someone else. Or I generally keep frozen ravioli or tortellini around which is always a fast and easy meal.

and it's not below me to just pick up take out for a group either - i don't feel put out by that. and i don't feel that everything needs to be homemade.

the point is who you are eating with, not what you are eating, right?

would you be able to whip up a meal in a pinch?

Re: are you prepared for last minute guests?

  • Nope. I mean, in theory I am. I usually have plenty of stuff on-hand that I can whip up in a hurry but I am a crazyperson and I like things to be a certain way. If I whip up a pasta dish, I'll be miffed that I don't have the "right" salad dressing and the "perfect" bread and a well thought out dessert to accompany it. It's stupid and I need to unclench, I know.

Now if someone wants to come over for snacks and drinks, I'm good to go. I have all kinds of boozey options and stuff for dips and such and can pair things up pretty easily.

  • As long as they don't mind eating cereal or Stouffer's frozen entrees, I'm all set.

This is me in a nut shell!!! I could theoretically have people over in an instant, but I'm particular. But DH can always whip up some yummy drinks, and we usually have snacks on hand.

  • Right now all I have in my freezer is frozen corn, fudge bars and vodka. Not even Rachael Ray could whip up something with that. I seriously need to go shopping.

  • You know what? Now that I think about it, I am also ill-prepared for last minute hosting because my house is always a little messy. I like the bathroom to be freshly cleaned when I have people over as well. What's interesting is that I don't really care if someone else's house is messy. I don't judge them over it. (honestly!) But this is one of those instances when my anxiety gets the best of me.
  • my house is spotless for first time visits, and then after that, i don't care. so long as my first impression was a good one, i don't give a rat's a$$ about any other impression - haha!

our home looks like two FT working adults and two children live there who don't have a cleaning service.

This is why we can't have people over last minute LOL.  If something does come up last minute, I'm barking cleaning instructions to DH while out figure out the food situation.
