My supervisor mentioned the other day that she was taking off to get her haircut and would be back before the end of the day. I'm guessing she may have accrued some comp time to do this because I know that she's used her vacation time for the year and she got there the same time as me that morning. Our policy is pretty clear that she can't use sick leave, too.
Honestly, it has never occured to me to get a haircut during the work day--probably because I never have the vacation time for it--but is this a pretty normal thing? My schedule after work is hectic for the next couple of weeks and I'm dying for a haircut, but I'd feel weird asking my supervisor if I could take time during the day to do this if it's more of a manager's priveledge and not just a comp time thing. I could gamble trying to go on my lunch hour, but the drive to and back from my stylist is almost a half hour and the last thing I'd want him to do is rush.
Re: Hair Cuts During the Work Day?
I think it's more how your workplace is.
Going to get my hair cut and being gone for, say, 45 minutes, wouldn't be considered a big deal. Especially if I was getting my work done. It's not like I have to clock in and out.
I've never done it, but my salon is usually open on Saturdays and later in the evenings. I did have a CW who would get a quick pedi on her lunch hour though.

Some women I work with like to get their nails done "over their lunch hour." It turns out to be way longer than an hour. Our office does offer flex time (up to 4 hrs each month to come early or stay late to make up time) but I have no idea if they're using this time or if they just don't make it up.
Personally, it's never occured to me to run this type of personal errand during the work day. Dr appointments, maybe, but I'd still use my vacation days to do it.
I personally wouldn't do it, but where I work, it's important to be there since it's a collaborative environment.
If she's getting her work done and there aren't any other red flags, I wouldn't worry about it.
That doesn't sound right given your description of your workplace. Every environment is different. In my department we don't clock in or out, and we put in so much overtime at certain times of the quarter, that there is an "unofficial" comp time understanding, and nobody really abuses it so it works for everyone.
I have done this. As long as my hours get billed, I can be on the moon. It really depends on your office environment though.
My old boss would get her hair cut during the day. She rarely left the office for anything else...I guess maybe her hairstylist didn't have evening appointments? Anyway, it wasn't a big deal.
My DH works at a naval shipyard and gets his hair cut during the work day at the shipyard barber shop. I don't even think he goes during lunch, but his haircut only takes about 5 minutes with his buzz cut and his bald spot!
I've run numerous errands during the work day. Including doctors appointments. There is something about getting my hair done, though, that I can't see doing during the day. For one, I usually also get it highlighted, so it would take too long. But I'd also feel weird walking back into work w/ my hair "done" (the stylists NEVER style it the way I do - so it would very obviously look different!).
but that's just a personal preference thing.

Of the 3 ladies in my office, I am the only one who hasn't gone during office hours. But I'm a tight-wad and don't want to pay extra to have it styled. And I'm definitely not gonna come to work with wet hair!

From the Hair Stylist's POV-
Plenty of people do this. Your stylist can be just as important as your dr, when you're dealing with your looks. You've built a solid, trusting relationship, your stylist knows your hair and you. Your salon or stylist may not be open or have an appointment after your working hours.
So yes, I think its great that people make time for themselves. When it comes to the work ethic portion, that depends on your company.
This exactly. I have done on it on more than a few occasions but it isn't routine and I push it to late in the day so I don't have to feel rushed.
I don't, but (a) I usually do color and cut, and i'm there probably 2+ hours and (b) my hair dresser is available one evening a week, and so I book for the latest possible appointment and run out of the office at 5 promptly.
If (a) I was only doing cut and (b) my hairdresser wasn't available evenings and (c) he were a little closer to my office, I would likely do a late afternoon appt and leave early for the day.
I get my hair cut on Saturdays, usually. That's what Saturdays are for, for me at least.
If I left to get a haircut, I'd have to get someone to sub at least two classes for me, since my place isn't anywhere near where I work. It would never occur to me to do this.
I would and have scheduled doctor's appointments during the day, but I try to go during a time when my class load is light and having someone cover for me is no big deal.
