Kinder/1st teachers

Hey there, I know there are a few of you around these parts....

I have a little question for you...my child knows all of her letter sounds except 2 that she has confusion on....u and y.

Do you have a tips or tricks to help her grasp the difference between the 2? She keeps confusing them.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Kinder/1st teachers

  • This year, I have started singing the song that the alphabet on the fridge sings. (the leap frog magnetic alphabet thing for  your fridge)- you put a letter in and push it and it says u says "uh" u says "uh". we did the letter B yesterday in my class- the kids were still singing it all day today.but i promise even the low kids knew it.

    B says "b"

    B says "b"

    every letter has a sound

    B says "b".

also- there's hand gestures for letter sounds to help them remember. U seems to be an easy one that the kids who went to pre-k usually remember. I know U is a thumbs up kinda like you're pushing up an umbrella when you make the U sound. so they associate it with up and umbrella...

I don't remember the y motion but they're taped to my wall... if either of these are helpful, good. but you probably tried them already being a former teacher yourself.

  • Thanks Ginger.Just to clarify, she can identify the two letters just fine. She wants to try and pronounce the "u" sound as 'You' like 'unique' instead of "uh".And for Y she wants to say "why" instead of "yuh".I got some flashcards that have the letter and then a picture of something that starts with that letter (I.e. Y has a picture of yellow yarn) in hopes that will help jog her memory.I appreciate you taking the time out to offer those suggestions! I will look in to them for sure!

  • I had to go back and confirm (just now- Embarrassed ) what the sounds were.  C has the Leap Frog magnet letters Ginger mentioned

U say U (You)  and U says Uh every letter makes a sound U says U and Uh

Y says Yuh and Y says I every letter makes a sound Y says Yuh and I

She has half of it right.  Does she say both pronunciations of her other vowels?  ah and A etc?

It make be easier for her to understand if you go through both pronunciations of all of them.  I'm pretty sure the letters that have two sounds are also a different color on the toy so they realize that those letters make 2 sounds.

  • U makes the "you" sound and the "uh" sound. Most kids will get the "you" sound first before the "uh." For example: unicorn and umbrella

I highly recommend ALL songs by Dr. Jean. Even though it will include all the other letters it will still be great for her to hear. All of the songs are kid friendly and will get her moving along with saying the letters, sounds, and words that start with the letter. In my classroom I use Dr. Jean all the time.

You could also get different picture cards that start with those letters along with the letter cards. She then will have to match up the letter with the picture so it will force her to say the word outloud and then match it with the corrisponding letter. Does that make since? You can use pictures that start with the letter (for ex: have a y card and then a picture of a yo-yo). Eventually you can move onto ending sounds after she has mastered the beginning sounds.

I hope all of this makes since! If it doesn't just page me and let me know.

  • Thanks!

The teacher wants her to focus first on the short vowel sounds and the /yah/  sound for Y. I guess because the other sounds come more naturally for the kids.

We do have several Dr. Jean CDs....so I'll look in to getting another.

    Thanks again for the advice!
