I have a pregnancy question. Can you all help? Por favor?!

Okay so I just took my glucose test on Friday. The NP called me today and left a voice mail message on my phone. She said that I passed my glucose part of the test. It was 98 and it had to be below 130 (? I think that's what she said. I was a little overwhelmed with all of the information)

But then she suggested that I take an addidtional iron supplement since I have been extra tired lately. Also she said I needed to take an antibiotic because I have Group B strep? I googled it (I probably shouldn't have, now I'm freaked out) and it said that it is an infection in the womb, amniotic fluid and the urinary tract.

Have any of you ladies heard or dealt with this? I think I am overanalyzing this (which I tend to do). And I am starting to daydream about Charli being sick, etc. Halp!

Re: I have a pregnancy question. Can you all help? Por favor?!

  • I tested positive for Group B strep. I didn't take any antibiotics; I just had an antibiotic put into my IV when I was induced. I also had to stay in the hospital an extra day to make sure JJ and I were OK [we both were and had no complications whatsoever].

I also had to take iron while I was pregnant since I have anemia [I still take iron pills, actually]. It helped a lot with my energy, and it didn't do any damage to JJ since it was a pretty low dose.

I know the Group B strep can be nerve-wracking, but as long as the proper precautions are taken, I know you guys will be just fine. Just be prepared to stay in the hospital longer than normal.

  • I have always been negative for Group B Strep, but my OB was training a med student when she did my GBS swab, so she gave a lot more info than I've heard before. It can be passed to the baby during vaginal delivery. We're planning a c/s for me, but if I were positive, we'd need to know so that I could be given antibiotics if my water breaks. Antibiotics given before labor will kill some or all of the bacteria, but it can come back. This is why most Drs will just wait to give IV antibiotics during labor (though I have heard of them giving oral antibiotics during pregnancy). It is serious, but when treated with antibiotics, tends to not be a problem for the baby.

Did you read the CDC's or ACOG's pages about GBS?

Yeah - I wasn't told all that. I was told most, but not all. You are definitely more well-versed on GBS than me. :P

  • My iron was low, too, and I had to take iron supplements. I'd recommend taking a stool softener with them!

I know a few people who tested positive for GBS and just had the antibiotic in their IV when in labor (I think Alyssa had this, too.)

You and Charli will be fine! :)

  • Yes I did too!

I'm allergic to penicillin too, (which is typically what they give you while in labor).  So I had an alternative drug.  The only side effect was that I had a bad taste in my mouth while in labor.  Pretty much you just have to get to the hospital as soon as possible after your water breaks and let the nurses at L&D know that you tested positive.

I was definitely freaked out an upset when I found out I had it, but it was completely fine.  The only other thing I didn't like was that it was hard to walk around in labor since you had an IV pole attached to you.

  • I don't have anything to add about GBS, I think the other ladies covered it well. I just wanted to add that if you start an iron supplement, you should take it the opposite time of the day that you take your prenatal. The prenatal has extra calcium, and the iron can inhibit the absorption of the calcium (or vice versa). So take one in the AM and one in the PM.
  • the cut off we used was 130 -- anything over required a three hour fasting glucose -- you scored a 98 - thats very normal, it ranges from 60-130 -- if it was like 125 or something, then maybe she would consider other things.

iron depletion is very common in pregnancy -- you can buy ferrous sulfate at the pharmacy without a prescription

group b strep can be deadly for an infant if the mother is positive and no treatment is done.  we had a mother who lost her baby -- she tested negative at 36 weeks went into spontaneous labor at 37 weeks while in the interim became GBS positive -- her baby suffered so badly, couldn't breathe appropriately, kidney failure and other things ( all within a few hours of birth ) - he ended up having sepsis and died 2 days later.
