Advice please: stick with decent, comfortable job or go with different job with better benefits?

I currently work full time at a job I like (for the most part). Its a smaller non-profit company. I like my coworkers, my supervisor, the environment, & the pay is alright. I've been here 4 years and I'm fairly comfortable. However, I don't know that there is much room for advancement with in this company and I am fairly certain this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life (but I'm not exactly sure what it is I want to do for the rest of my life so that part isn't a major deciding factor). The only thing at this point that could make it better is reducing my hours by a few each week (so I can be home when the kids get off the bus) and earning a little more per hour (which would be very difficult at this time due to the economy).

So on a whim (mostly because it sounded different and interesting and figured what the heck), I applied for another job but its for the State. I aced the interview and they want to hire me. The hours would be a lot more flexible, I'd basically set my own schedule, the pay would be at least $2.00 more per hour than what I'm earning now. The advancement opportunites are definitely increased with this position/organization. My problem, I'm not sure I'm really interested in the job itself. I'm interested in everything that comes with the job but not the job itself.

I need some advice. Ideally, I'd like to stay at my current job, work less hours and earn more per hour. Do I mention the job offer to my current boss at all or just go to him and request the changes? Or do I brave up and accept the new job opportunity and hope that I learn to like it?

  • First congrats on the job offer!

I think you should take the new job with the State.  You know enough to realize current company isn't what you want to do forever and there aren't opportunities for you to advance or explore other career paths.  Working for the state will offer you job security, more pay, flexible hours and it exposes you to some other career fields that may interest you.

If part of your reason for working for the non-profit was because you have a strong connection with their cause, you can talk with them about volunteering so that you're still supporting the organization.

  • I say take the new job! :) congrats on getting it first of all, and second, it opens you up to new opportunities like PP said.
