TR: Eat Habits/Weight Gain

I have a crazy mom question. G had her 15month check up, she's in the 15% now (was at 30% at 1yr). She's fallen off her growth chart. Pedi said just to encourage good fat foods and suggested pedialyte. I talked to her how G has very loose stool. She hasn't had a firm poop in months(6months atleast), but it's not watery. I also talked to her about how G likes to eat all day, she eats B,L,D and then has 2 snack in between each. She is constantly hungry and asking for more. Pedi suggested we try to keep a stricter schedule, although I hate to do that. I feel like she should eat when she's hungry.

Pedi also said if G is still low/off her growth chart they will do testing for celiac(sp?) disease and her thyroid.

I forgot to mention to pedi, but I'm also a little worried about G. Maybe this a normal toddler thing, but she will eat anything. She licks sunscreen off her arm, eats chalk constantly, etc. Is that just normal?

I guess I'm asking if this is all normal toddler behavior, and I'm just being crazy. Or if it's something I should talk to our pedi about.  Jeff & his whole family are very skinny ppl, so I just attribute her size to heredity.

It's just been on my mind lately, thought maybe you ladies could help me out!

Re: TR: Eat Habits/Weight Gain

  • Hudson has also been steadily declining... he isn't what I would call skinny though at all.  He also could eat anytime anywhere.  He also will eat chalk/ crayons anything you put in reach of him that he thinks can be ingested, lol.  So I wouldn't worry on that account as I feel that is really common for this age.  I would just push fatty foods as much as you can.  She' probably just a skinny girl :D

  • I should clarify that she's fallen of HER growth chart curve, not the pedis. She used to be average size and has just been declining. It doesn't help that she's super active either tho :)

  • I'm sure you've thought of this - but I wouldn't be overly concerned that she hasn't gained weight since her 12 month appointment considering the fact that she started walking in between those months.  I would guess that very rarely do toddlers gain much weight in those first months when they become mobile.

As for eating odd things - I would assume it's normal.  However, if you're overly concerned you could always supplement with a Nutrient Enhanced Shake or something?  That way you could eliminate the question that she's doing it because she's not getting something from her diet.
