Money Matters Board
Occasionally I add spice to my interweb life by checking out the money matters board. I dont know why I do it because every time I feel like a poor failure. For instance, there is a post on there now where someone laid out a pretty solid budget including even minor categories like "books" and they still have $2k leftover every month.....and the comments are still saying that adding the cost of a child will stress the budget too much. REALLY? You cannot support a child with $2k a month as well as lots of other discretionary spending categories that could be cut down? They would straight up laugh at me if they saw how much money I "allot" to my child each month!

we have no monthly additional cost for milo.
since we breastfeed and cloth diaper, and our insurance already covered offspring.
now that he eats solids he eats a portion of what we eat. so we aren't buying baby food etc.
mm is a little to strict for me.
we also eat out way less.
but cloth diapering i think is the biggest thing for us, like we never have to go out and buy diapers.
I agree. Babies themselves are not expensive in my experience either, its the childcare cost that gets you! Paying $1k a month for daycare or quitting your job to become a SAHM and losing that monthly income are both hard financial realities. I ooze jealousy toward the people who have family to watch their kids for free.
i quit prior to baby. but our lifestyle hasn't really changed that much. clearly we were poor spenders before i quit
Kross, I agree with your whole statement! I also found that we just naturally cut back on some things and that balanced out the money we were putting out for the kid. I remember freaking when I was pregnant about how much everything was going to cost and all my friends that have kids kept telling me that things just work out. I didn't believe them but it's true.
We are planning to use CD too. Besides being better for the baby and environment, this is one of the main reasons we chose to CD. Disposables are expensive!

Hindsight is 20/20. I wish I would have cloth diapered Chase. Then I could have passed it on to Bella & this new kid. The amount of money we have spent in diapers over the past 4 years makes me nauseous. And the fact that I am going back to having 2 in diapers. gah!
I think the biggest expense for a baby is childcare, diapers (if using disposables) and formula (if you choose/need to formula feed).
Sometimes I think people blow disposable diaper prices out of proportion, especially with services like Amazon Mom. I just bought a box of 128 Huggies Little Movers for $22. That will last almost a month. That's not exactly a huge expenditure.
Formula, on the other hand, bleeds you dry.
