Thinking of going back to school...

So I'm 75% sure I am going back to school. To get started I was thinking of taking an online class through UMaine this Spring. The problem is that it starts 3 weeks after my due date. Would it be practical for me to even consider taking this class or should I wait to start something like this until the Summer or next Fall? I'm really anxious to get moving on this and start getting some classes done! I'm thinking since it's online it may not be so bad.

Re: Thinking of going back to school...

  • YAY for you!  That's awesome.  In my experiences with teaching online courses they are more flexible than in person classes.

  • It's not something I would want to start that soon after giving birth.  Worst case scenarios the baby could be two weeks later than your due date, you could have an extended stay in the hospital, you could be on painkillers from a c-section.  Best case scenario, you are tired, your brain is mush, and you want to stare at your baby all day.  Even with the flexibility of an online class, I wouldn't have been up for the reading and work required of any class.

  • Online courses are definitely more flexible than in-person ones.  You could do the work whenever the kiddo is napping or playing with the hubs.  That said, I have no idea what it's like to have a three-week-old.  My understanding, though, is that you're still in the sleep-when-they're-sleeping mode, so IDK if you'd want to be spending your free time on schoolwork.  You might feel more comfortable if you started in the summer rather than trying to figure out being a momma and being a student again at the same time.  If you decide you want to go for it, make sure you find out what the drop dates are - there will be a point where you can drop and get all of your money back, a point where you can drop and get 50% of your money back, and so on.  You could give it a go for a week or two and decide how it's going.  If you feel like you'd be better to wait, no harm no foul.  If you feel like it's working, you'll have one course under your belt.

Good for you, btw, for doing this.  I've thought about it/tried it a bunch of times and I'm just too lazy to work and go to school!

  • I totally would not have wanted to have to attend class, virtual or not, with a newborn at home.

Best case, your baby comes at 37 weeks and you have a 6 week old when class starts -- you could probably handle it.

Worse case, your baby is 2 weeks late and you have a 1 week old infant when class starts -- that would be tough. At a week old, you're running on adrenaline, you don't have a routine yet, you may not even have the breastfeeding thing working right.  If you had a c-section, you may be only 2 or 3 days home from the hospital.

I would wait until summer or fall unless you just need this one class to start a full-time program in the fall and this is the only time you can take it (but it doesn't sound like this is the case).

  • just thought of this-

FALL classes are just starting up this week or next.  You could do a class right now and be done before baby.

Unfortunately the class I need to start with isn't offered. I took 2 classes in college the first time around and the class that starts in the spring is a "refresher" course that combines both these classes.

Good idea. I think I'm going to check out their drop dates. If he comes early and I have an easy delivery, recovery etc I will regret at least not trying the course. I think if I can try it for a week or 2 and then drop (for a full refund) if I need to, that will be a good option. :)

  • what the heck? I tried to edit, but it just reposted. oops.
  • Yay, I'm excited for you!

I don't think I'd want to start class, even online, that soon after giving birth, but I've never given birth so I can't say for sure, lol.

It's just that there are so many variables, you can't know in advance how you'll feel 3 weeks after, or if the baby will be late (common with first babes, I think?) and it will be less than 3 weeks after!

  • What did you decide to go back for?

What did you decide to go back for?

Accounting (and possibly finance too eventually). I have my BS in Business so I can take a Post Bachelorette Certificate program in Accounting at UMaine for only 21 credits. It will basically be an add on to my current degree. I've researched a lot of different areas (as you know...and thanks again for your help a few months ago!). I think this field will be a really good fit for my personality. Plus from what I've heard from people and online, the field is pretty good for jobs opportunities, pay, etc. I'm excited. :)

  • Sounds like a really smart move!  I can see why you're eager to get started.

  • It's doable, but not ideal.  My SIL did it and she was able to get the stuff done, but she didn't do as well as she hoped and didn't always have enough time.  I know her biggest issue was taking the timed tests because if no one was around she would have to stop and help LO.  Also, if you are nursing LO will eat about every 2 hours at that point, so it would make it difficult.  (Something I didn't expect).  You will also probably be lacking in sleep and trying to sleep when the baby sleeps. Just my two cents.  Best of luck!
