ugh...i think i say to much, work related

so this morning i thought i should tell my boss that i'm looking for part time work so that if/when she gets calls she'll know i'm not trying to leave. she won't be my boss for much longer anyway, my promotion starts tomorrow.. but whatevs.

anyway, so i told her about suze orman freaked me out and made me realize H & I aren't doing enough and we're young and nows the time. so she comes back and says, we'll you better not let it interfere with this job. UM HELLO, DUH! This is the job that pays my bills.. i'm sure a parttime job won't even pay half of what i make here.. come on!

it super annoyed me because i'm sure she'll gossip about it now. that is the thing about working for a small company, even if you tell some one something in private... her included, she will tell. and there's nothing i can do about it.

anyway... did i even have to tell her? did i do the right thing?

please don't quote this.. i'll probably dd it later.. just fyi.

  • you did the right thing by telling her, and she said something legitimate by saying she hopes it doesn't interfere.

sure she'll gossip, but oh well. if people ask about it, say you're just looking for some extra cash.

  • What you did was very courteous, but what she said was on par too. I'm sure she felt like she just needed to reiterate it, even though you already know it. Not every employee has common sense like that.

If you signed an NDA when you first started with your company, you might want to ask HR for a copy of that to make sure that you aren't violating anything and putting your current job in jeopardy.

ditto this - I'm guessing she could have acted a little more professional and not had a rude tone (that's how it sounds in your post), but she probably was just saying what she felt was necessary.  And she won't be your boss much longer, so don't let it bother you!

  • yeah, i guess you're right that of course she would say something like that. i guess it made me feel like she must think i'm stupid to mess up this. this job pays all our bills. why would i mess that up?

i guess my other problem is that she is hr/office manager and she yelled this after me as i left her office so across the office.. and that irritated me.

maybe i need to get over it. lol.

  • Don't take it personally. HR has to assume that everyone doesn't have common sense and needs to state the obvious, to cover their azz and the companies azz. In HR you can't assume anything.

And, the fact that she yelled it out across the office is totally unprofessional.

  • I think you did the right thing by telling her, but I wouldn't have mentioned it until I'd done some applications and I might have even waited until I had some interviews to bring it up.

  • thanks girls. you all are always so helpful.

uw-i didn't sign anything like that so i'm good. i started 5 years ago this month making like 8 an hour... doing data entry... this company has been great to me and i'm making way more than when i started and i've been able to move up pretty quickly considering it is a family run/smaller company and there aren't a lot of opportunities to so. i'm VERy thankful for my job. i hope that they know that. i just really don't want to be in debt and screwed if something ever happens to h or i. and unfortunately we don't have family to fall back on. :(

I filled out a couple of applications and fortunately one of the places that I applied is run by a friend of mine. So she said she'd call me this afternoon for an interview. I told her not to hire me if she didn't think i was a perfect fit for her store, but I know the interview will be this week and I just wanted to tell her before anyone called her/here.

This, and especially the second part.

FYI - she could respond like MY boss does. The bank called to do the final confirmation on my employment. She sent me an IM to tell me (followed with a "Yay!" because she knows how long this house hunt has been.) I was being silly and responded, "What did you say?!" She wrote back "date of hire, how long employed, that we plan on keeping you". I replied, "That's always nice to hear!" She could have left it at that, but nooOooo, she has to always add a jab at the end of stuff, "Well, you should make sure your resume is up to date because you never know when someone might get a wild hair." REALLY!? Was it necessary to ALWAYS make me feel like my job is in jeopardy?

And...while Suze Orman is brilliant, I DON'T think you need to let her freak you the heck out. :)
