Clicky Poll: Savings Accounts

Okay, so we've been talking about savings accounts and money management.  I'm curious what sort of emergency fund we all have.  Not retirement funds, CD's, or anything like that but honest to goodness cash in the bank that you could withdraw without penalty.

And this would be for covering mortgage/rent/food/utilities/hair appointments/gas/etc...

Re: Clicky Poll: Savings Accounts

  • i might need an SS. i'm not sure. we have 2 main "savings" accounts. we have one traditional savings account, but it doesn't have very much money in it...maybe 3 months tops of living expenses. we also have our stock trading account...which we always say we'd pull out in the case that we both get fired at the same time and don't qualify for unemployment (worst case scenario, no income whatsoever). we have about 2 years of living expenses there.

    which should i pick?

ETA: if we combine all of our "little" traditional savings accounts,  we'd add up to another couple months in backup money.

and no real "penalty" for pulling out stock money, only transaction fees for selling the stock.

Can you pull the money out of your stock trading account without penalty?  If so - include it.   :)

  • I'm in the 7 to 10 month category, but I almost felt like I should pick the category above it because we're just barely into 7 months. It'll be another three months before we get to 8 months...

  • SS* we don't have an emergency fund?  We just have what's in our accounts - no separate account for emergency/savings.  However, we also have VERY little chance of needing one right now.

would you consider trading fees penalty?

i'm talking with uw offline about it, and she thinks i shouldn't include it because technically the stock market can just crash crash crash and we'd be zero'd out. (she's so pessimistic Angry )

  • I had half a month's salary in my savings, but will be gouging it nicely for moving expenses then going back to working on getting it back up. Now that we'll have a house, DH and I will need to reevaluate expenses in another month or so and make a plan for getting our savings back up and more so that it can cover 3 months unemployment for one of us (then I'll feel fine).

  • We had a couple months saved up at one point but have had a lot "emergancies" come up this year, and I swear stuff just keeps coming =(. We are hoping to start a new savings account in October after our entire CC is paid off (not much left!).

We also do have investments if it really came down to it as well.

  • I said one and it stresses me out, but it's more like 1 1/2 -2, but 2-3 is not accurate.  Although, w/ business expenses included, it's closer to 1.  I'm self employed and this can change every month...I did have more set aside.  And I've pre-paid a ton of taxes, so I'm hoping I may get some of that back.
