House decor question

We have a raised ranch style house.  On either side of the front door are tall and narrow windows (maybe 30" tall by 8" wide).  Right now there are lace curtains that were left with the house.  I hate them and they are filthy so I want to find something to replace them with, either new curtains or possibly something to make the windows look frosted to keep the privacy.  Has anyone seen curtains in that odd size or used a product to "frost" windows?

Re: House decor question

  • We have sidelights on our door too.  When we moved in, it had disgusting stick on fake "stained glass".. it just looked old and 70's style (even though the house was built in '88).

We were going to replace the door so I used frosted stuff we had used in our garage.  It actually doesn't look too bad but I want to replace it with plain frosted (the one we have has squares in it).

You can get little curtains for the sidelights, usually I see lacy stuff (NMS) but you have to buy these mini curtain rods for it that have to be nailed in.

  • Instead of lace, I've also seen just a sheer organza fabric done as well (get the same light/viewing effect without the pattern). I'm not sure about the frosted stuff only because I tend to think sometimes it looks cheesy, but that's just my opinion.

If you don't want to drill holes for little rods, they have small tension rods for things just like this, too.

  • I have a raised ranch too and the same windows you are talking about.  I have a sheer curtain that tapers at both ends and a curtain rod at both ends to keep the curtain in place.  Since the area is metal, the curtain rods are magnetic.  They wash easily and are pretty private.  I got the curtains at JC Penney.
  • Thanks ladies!
