Feels good to get that off my chest

I told both of my bosses that I do not plan on coming back after the baby is born. It feels so good to get that out and let them know.

I have not had a break in employment since I was 15, so this will be a huge change!

  • So proud of you for being upfront & honest with them about your plans! So many women think it's okay to just leave their employer hanging.

I agree completely with CD. I'm so happy for you that you guys are in a position where you can do this. I'm sure it will be a very nice break for you!

  • Good for you! I know that has to be a huge weight off and now you can just enjoy the time you have before baby arrives.

I third this sentiment.  As a manager, a working mom and a fellow woman, this is the right way to do it and I thank you for having the courage to do so.  More women need to step up and handle it this way, in my opinion.

I'll Fifth (sp?) this!  Enjoy your time home with LO!  I so wish I was able to stay at home after Wyatt was born.

OK I am not going to "sixthed" the above (though i do commend you), but I am going to "second" Kristin&Kelly's comment about wishing she could stay home after Wyatt was born.  Stick out tongue

  • Thanks everyone! Our COO came to my desk a little bit ago and thanked me for giving them notice and said he really appreciated it and that most people in that situation don't.

    Angry

I hate that things like this ruin credibility (not to mention ML benefits) for the rest of us. It really makes me angry and frustrated. I'm not usually a raging feminist, but I feel like my bra-burning side comes out when this comes up.

Thanks again for being upfront and honest with your employer.

  • Let the count down begin! It says a lot about you that you told them BEFORE having E.

  • Glad you were finally able to tell them. I know especially in your department they need the heads up. I am going to party devils advocate though.I agree with everyone that if you know you aren't coming back you should let your employer know but what if you change your mind while you are on leave? I never thought I would want to be a SAHM but now that Olivia is here I have a whole new perspective. I am planning on returning to work because we can't afford for me not to but if we could I would totally change my mind ay this point. (Sorry for the formatting I am on my phone)

I think this is a reasonable exception and I'm sure there are women who had every intention of going back and change their minds. I think the women most of us are referring to though are the ones who have no intention whatsoever of returning but still choose not to give their employer notice.

  • Personally I have no problem with a woman changing her mind if she is willing to return to work temporarily (as her employer was banking on) to wrap up anything and/or train her replacement if needed as well as paying back any ML benefits.

    Yes

  • Good for you!  It will definitely be a big change, but hopefully it will be the best thing for your newly expanded family.  Let me know if you want to chat about it more, since this is what we did.

I could not imagine doing this.  When I left FCCJ two years ago, they were fully aware that I did not intend to return.  I guess I could understand if someone really did have intentions of going back, but had a change of heart during leave.

Happens ALL the time where I work. I realize some do it, so they can collect their short term disability payments. It is a PITA for the company because we have to hold their position until their FMLA runs out.
