people with Verizon cell phones....

I am due for an upgrade and am thinking about getting a new phone for my birthday.  However, I am still holding on to my old LG Dare that requires no data plan and I basically have never really downloaded anything other than different ringtones.  I am not looking forward to having to pay for a data plan, but I know that is the way this is going.  My problem is I have no idea what kind of phone to get.  I will probably be using it only for internet and apps...not e-mails or work type stuff.  I would like to keep the cost to a minimum.  Anyone have any recommendations??  I am afraid to go to the actual store because I think I will be overwhelmed!  If anyone has any recs I can look them up on the Verizon website and research!  Thanks for the help ladies!

Re: people with Verizon cell phones....

  • While I'm really happy with Verizon, I am probably in the minority when I say I hate my iPhone.  I wish I had gotten either a Droid or a Samsung (whatever their touch is) over an iPhone.  DH used to have a Droid and then upgraded to the iPhone when it came out.  Shortly after, I was elgible for an upgrade as well so I bit the bullet and tried the iPhone.  From past experience, I think the Droid is much more user friendly and has a keyboard; something I really miss.  On my iPhone, apps will randomly shut down in the middle of using the app and it's so frustrating!  Verizon said it's because the network gets overloaded but I think it's just the OS.  And before I learned that the software needed to be upgraded through iTunes from time to time, my phone also would randomly shut off and not turn back on.  Oh, and you also can't get Flash on the iPhone (I know you can on the Droid...not sure about Samsung) so some of the sites you visit are not accessible on the iPhone and that's kinda become a PITA.  I can't wait for my 2 years to be up!

Ahhh, good point about the flash thing!  We have an Ipad and it does the same thing....since they are both Apple that makes sense.

  • DH and I both have Droid X2's and we love them. The screen is bigger than an iPhone's screen which is what I always notice when I see an iPhone. I think we paid $200 each and then got a $50 rebate.

ETA: The battery life is awful, but I think that is the case with many smart phones.

  • I've had a droid incredible and an iPhone, and I've been happy with both of them, so I don't think you could go wrong with either.

However, the cost will be the same on Verizon if you use internet, whether or not you use email. I think it's like...$30-ish a month extra.

Yeah, I realize this....which is why I have reservations about giving up my non-smartphone!  I just wanted to point out that I would be using it for more pleasure purpose than business!  Thanks for the recs!

  • I say go with a Droid if you already have an iPad.  I have an HTC Eris, DH has an HTC Incredible.  We both love our phones.  I can upgrade in a month and I'm sticking with the Droid.

And you say now that you won't use the internet, but once it's in your hands (or purse) all the time, you'll be hooked.  I used to make fun of DH for being attached to his phone and now the tables have turned.  I just about cried when my battery went dead during the power outage!   Big Smile

  • I still have an LG Dare too.  I really want a smart phone but I'm not sure between an iphone or Droid.  I haven't looked into it much since I have to wait until I get a job.  Good luck with your choice.

  • I have an LG phone with no data plan. I think it's called the LG Octane. If I hadn't just sunk money into the iPod touch, I would have gotten the iPhone.

  • Love my Droid X.  I previously had a BlackBerry and the Droid X just has so many more apps and capabilities.  Battery life is the only negative but with app killer it's not too bad.  If you're a member of Costco check them out...cheaper there!

  • I know i'm going to be in the minority in this post, but I love my Iphone. I had the original iphone with ATT and hated it (mainly bc i didn't want to switch to ATT and i didn't want a touch screen at that point so I was being bratty).  I was adamant against getting the Iphone once it came to Verizon.  I had been told numerous times that the Droid's OS blew the Iphones out of the water.  I've had 3 Droids in the matter of 6 months and HATED every single one of them.  My boss loved her original droid, but hated the next one.  Her horse person had a Droid and both have just stopped working.  Verizon has been awesome through the entire ordeal with every single phone.  After becoming tired of dealing with the continous issues I had with the Droid, I (not so) humbly went with the Iphone because frankly I just knew I wouldn't have issues and that was what I was so tired of.  I love it, and highly doubt i'll go back to another phone.

Ditto this! I just got a smartphone at the end of June and I felt the same way; oh, I'm not going to use it *that* much. But now I use it all the time, probably more than I should Embarrassed

I have a Samsung Fascinate and I love it. It's very user-friendly and the battery life is actually not too bad, but I don't use many apps right now (mainly email and FB). Also, just an FYI, I'm pretty sure Verizon did away with the $30 monthly unlimited data plan. Not sure what they have now but I think it's more of a tiered system depending on how much you use the internet.

  • I have the Droid Incredible 2 and I love it.  I bought it from amazonwireless.com and it was a LOT cheaper than going through the Verizon store.  I was a little hesitant at first to not go directly through Verizon but had no problems with them or the phone.  I also didn't think I would use the internet or e-mail very much but I use it a lot more than I expected. I didn't want to pay the $30 either but the "basic" phones I looked at were so horrible I caved.  I'm sure that is their "plan" to get everyone using the smartphones.
