Seller's contact info post-settlement??

We closed on our house on Friday and since closing was such a fiasco, we forgot to do certain things like get the seller's forwarding address and contact info.

Our agent has asked their agent for their contact info multiple times and she WILL NOT tell us. We have important questions like, for example, if they have a key to the storm door because we don't. We also need a forwarding address because we're still getting catalogs in their name.

Is there any reason you can think of that they wouldn't give us their contact info? Do you think it's the agent being weird or the sellers? They were really nice at closing, they said that they were going to give us their contact info (but forgot) and even said that they wanted to send us pictures of the house when they bought it 10 years ago so we could see all the work they did.

I have a few emails from the negotiation process with her email address on it. Since we're past the sale, would it be okay for me to reach out to her directly?

Re: Seller's contact info post-settlement??

  • I don't see it being a problem to reach out to her directly.  The sale is over so her agents responsibility for getting you information is over (for the most part).  If you have the ability, contact them.

  • You can contact them directly but if the only mail that's coming is catalogs just throw them out.  It takes a company FOREVER to update their catalog mailing list.

Regarding the locks on the storm door:  That's the FIRST thing DH and I changed, we did that right after we closed (same day).

This. The first thing we did was change all our locks. Any 'real' mail that shows up, we write on the envelope "No longer lives here", place it back in the mailbox and the mailman takes care of it.

  • I would not contact the sellers.  If you just closed on Friday I think it's odd to say "we're still getting their mail!" - it may just another few days for the post office to catch up.  I'd throw out catalogs and if anything that looks important, just write "moved, left no forwarding address" on the outside.  As for the locks, you should probably re-key anyway.

Haha, true... I didn't mean it like that :P

  • We had our builder's cell phone number, and have ran into him at the local bar a couple of times, because of the one year warranty for the house but there was no reason for us to contact him besides that.  When we moved, we immediately changed the locks on the door because you don't know who the previous owners gave keys to and there is no way I want them to possibly have access to our house.  Also, almost two years later we're still getting the occassional piece of mail for the builder but we just either mark it "RTS" or "Forward to Correct Address".  It's no big deal, really.

ETA- also, I don't know if I would give our forwarding contact information to buyers when we sell our house.  If something goes wrong down the line, I'd prefer that they don't have our contact information to possibly try to come back and pin something on us.

  • I just signed up for mail forwarding and FYI they do not forward catalogs. So you will continue to get them unless you call the catalog company and stop it.

    Good to know, thanks :)

  • re: the storm door -- just assume that, if they had they key, they would have left it for you. In the meanwhile, it's all yours now. Go to a locksmith and get it changed.

re: catalogs: As the realtor to ask the seller how s/he'd like any mail that did not get forwarded handled. Let them know that, if there isn't a response, you'll throw them away.

  • I agree with the others...

If they had the key they would have left it for you and you should really be changing the locks anyways.

Catalogs can go in the trash.  Anything that looks important write "no longer lives here" and leave for the mail man.

To be honest, I would not want my buyers to have my contact info.

    This.

Not only did we not get keys to the back door of our house, somebody purposely stripped the screws to make it more difficult to replace the lock.  DH actually had to drill it out, but that didn't add too much time to the job and now we're comfortable that nobody else is running around with keys to our house.

  • We recieved professional family pictures for the previous owners about 3 months after buying (after the forward expired) and I tracked them down with their e-mail and they were happy to chat with me and get their pictures.

I see nothing wrong in asking about the key and letting them know about the mail, but really catalogs won't be forwarded - you have to sign-up for those again, so it's no big deal to get those at all.

This is us. We have been very friendly with our buyers, but when the sale is over, I don't want them to know our contact info. If anything goes wrong, contact our realtor. Nothing personal against them.

  • when we moved into our house and continued getting mail intended for the previous owners, we just went thru the realtor. we gave everything to the selling agent and he got it to his clients. i'd go that route.
  • I would be livid if my agent was 'giving out' my address to people. Sorry.

You should have requested all keys for all doors at your closing as well as asked them any questions you had. Your forgetting ends up being your issue. You will probably need to contact a locksmith and have the lock removed and a new one put on (which frankly, I would do anyway once buying a home previously occupied).

It is not uncommon to receive catalogs/junk mail. I generally throw them out as the post office doesn't usually forward them. If you get 'real mail' then certainly give them back to your post office.

As for the emailing - I don't see a problem with that. If they don't respond - then don't stalk or spam them with multiple emails.

They really have no further obligations to you.

  • I emailed and she gave us the forwarding info. They said they would have during settlement anyway.

I got a few envelopes in the mail yesterday addressed to their business so I forwarded those along. They looked pretty important.
