handshakes

last night we had open house. i was amazed at the number of parents who had extremely weak handshakes. i got some firm shakes and then some would simply put their hand in mind (strange!). after a while i noticed the trends, especially between men and women, and then in different ethnicities.

does a weak handshake bother you?

Re: handshakes

  • Yes, very much.

Don't bother extending your hand if you aren't going to make an effort, it is not a mandatory greeting.

Wave or do a fist bump. lol

Love this!!  Yes, it does bother me.  It doesn't get to me as much when I know it's just the other person's culture.  What bothers me is when men half-a$$ is because I'm a woman.  I usually put a little extra oomph into it then.  On the flip side, I hate it when people try to overpower you with a handshake.  You don't have to break my knuckles or try to hover over me for me to respect you...

  • i'll take a weak handshake over the superman-squeeze any day of the week  especially if i'm wearing my aggie ring, because it hurts like the dickens when someone squeezes your hand really tight and you have on a huge ring.
  • OMG, yes.  Especially from women, but I don't expect it from men, so if that does happen, it creeps me out.  I call it the "limp fish" handshake and it gives me the heebie jeebies.  I was ALWAYS taught to give a very firm, hard handshake, especially as a woman.  I've gotten comments many times on my handshake, so I expect the same from others.

Yes yes yes dear Lord yes.  Especially from a man.  When we were having some work done around the house I would notice that men used weaker handshakes, I guess because I'm a woman?

It kind of skeeves me out; the whimpy handshake.

  • the worst was from a couple of moms who i already know because i've had their daughters for over a year now.

one simply put her hand in mind and nothing. don't bother shaking my hand if you aren't going to actually shake it.

    Ditto! I loathe limp handshakes.

  • Yes I hate the limp handshakes.  I also hate the knuckle cracking handshakes that some men give women.  I realize you should always give a firm handshake, but there's a fine line, between that and breaking a woman's hand.

  • Yes, very much.  I am a firm handshake type of person, so if someone gives me a dead fish, I feel like I am crushing their hand, then i feel bad!  I don't like it at all!
  • Yes! I agree, the limp fish handshake is horrible. What I hate the most is when people try to shake your hand with only their fingers. Hello, a handshake is when the palms of your hands touch and your fingers grasp the other person's hand.

  • Both weak handshakes and knuckle breaking handshakes bother me.

I met this lady at a wedding I just went to last weekend and I have my college ring on and she nearly broke my fingers.

I like a firm, yet non-painful type of handshake.

  • Limp handshakes dont really bug me, per say..

Its the (wealthy) people who put their hand out, as if you were going kiss their hand, and give a little squeeze to your hand.  THAT bugs the snot out of me. Its not even a handshake.

  • This post makes me laugh... and wonder...

I don't like the superman squeeze.  It makes me think you have something to prove.

And a limp wristed handshake skeeves me out.

As long as it's something in between and the person is expressing enthusiasm at the greeting I don't care about how firm it is or not - in fact I think the polite thing to do is mirror the handshake of the other person and move on.

  • I find myself sortof instinctively judgy about limp handshakes from either men or women. I feel like it's on par with common knowledge tidbits like "no white after labor day" or "no open toed shoes to an interview" that you're supposed to give a firm handshake. When someone, instead, flops their limp paw in my hand and holds hands with me for 2 seconds rather than shaking - I can't help giving them the internal side eye lol. Extra helping of side eye if the limp fish hand is also moist and clammy - wipe that thing on your pants or something before you come at me with it.
  • No, it doesn't bother me. Not everyone is comfortable with shaking hands. There are worse faults in my opinion. I've had strong hand shakes with people who turned out to be complete sleaze bags on the other side of their coin. My best friend has a weak hand shake and she's the best person I know.

i hope you never see me after labor day when its still 100 degree's because I'll certainly be wearing (if i can fit in them) my white pants.

Ha, no worries- my judging starts and stops at the limpy handshake. ;) Plus, coming from someone who wears flip flops practically year round, I'm far from being deputized by the Fashion Police.

I could have written this word for word. Well, except the "limp fish" thing. I don't have a name for it!

I get complimented all the time. I am a tiny person, but I don't shake hands like I am the size of a 12-year-old.

  • I don't remember the last time I shook someone's hand.  I just don't care one way or the other.

    This.

This. If they have a limp handshake it makes me kind of go "wah wah" but it doesn't bother me. I have also learned that to some cultures a strong handshake is considered rude or bad form, like Native Americans. You'll rarely get a strong handshake from an Indian and almost never from an Indian woman, ever.

  • It doesn't bother me, but I think a person's handshake says a lot about them.

Mine is apparently firm, people have commented on it in the past.
