Yeah, I might be able to get you there. I first learned to drive on a stick shift but I was terrible at it.

  • I voted yes But I despise stick shifts in traffic and on stopping on hills though. I have an automatic now and love it.

  • My mom insisted I learn stick and I HATED it!  Then I ended up with a stick car and came to love it.  I actually loved driving it in SF...it was a fun challenge!  I miss it but since DH doesn't know how to drive a stick, it didn't seem practical to have a manual.
  • Ugh, no. I have been with DH now for 13 years and he has wanted me to learn since day 1. I'm such a procrastinator!

I've driven a few times, but only on side streets with no real traffic.

  • Nope. DH tried to teach me a couple of times but we didn't practice it enough for it to really sink in, and I never really seemed to get it. I think part of it was that I just didn't see the point when there are automatic transmissions out there  :)
  • My parents bought me a brand new honda my senior year of high school. I got in it and couldn't drive it because it was a stick shift. School started three days later...so I learned pretty quick!

  • The one time DH tried to teach me, I got so mad I hopped out of the driver's seat and walked home, leaving him in the middle of the road. Ooops :)

Tritto! When my brother-in-law tries to teach me on his truck I do great. When my husband tries to teach me on his truck-it's a big ol mess.

  • I've been driving stick shifts for the last (ahem) 20 years or so and I am a die-hard fan.  We just bought a new car and sold my old 5-speed Crying,  and I so wanted a stick shift but the Subaru people couldn't find one in NorCal, so we got an automatic.  I don't like it as much, but I'll admit that it makes the Bay Bridge toll plaza a little easier in the mornings.

When DH was used-car shopping, he was looking for a stick everywhere. He eventually found one that he liked, and learned that it was manufactured in Florida and the previous owner had driven it out here. Apparently they just don't manufacture anything but automatics on the west coast!

  • Automatics have become much more common. But even when I was learning to drive everyone I knew had a stick shift. Any hand-me-down car I could have gotten in high school was a stick shift. I got super frustrated trying to learn to drive on one. Finally when I was starting college my grandpa got an automatic pick-up. So I really learned to drive on that. I didn't get my driver's license until I was 18.
  • I've learned how to, my first car I drove was a manual.  But I am horrible at it. When E was a baby I almost got us killed stalling out in an intersection.

Never again will I drive a stinking manual!

This sounds like us. I feel kinda silly that we own three cars, two of them stick shifts, and I can't drive them. But in my defense, the pickup has a broken bench seat that doesn't adjust so I end with a huge backache after every time we practice. And dh's muscle car with tons of horsepower but no power brakes or power steering... neither one of us want me driving that!
