Guests-menu advice

I'm having my H's cousin and her BF over for dinner Friday night. I had been planning black bean veggie burgers for Friday, but now that H invited them to dinner  I am not sure if that would be appealing to ppl who aren't used to it. I make good veggie burgers (thanks JennyBee for the recipes!) but I wasn't sure about having them with guests over. What do you think?

Re: Guests-menu advice

  • I say go for it! Homemade veggie burgers are a real treat! Sometimes the best thing about going to someone's house for a meal is being introduced to something you might not have tried otherwise!

  • I think it's fine - it's not like someone who likes/enjoys meat must have it at every meal, or is offended by not having it.  It's not the flip side of trying to serve beef burgers to a vegetarian.  Everyone needs veggies and most carnivores still like some of them.

  • I think that's a know your audience kind of thing. Many of my non-veggie friends would be happy to eat black bean burgers for dinner. On the other hand, my dad would take issue with not being served meat at dinner. Do you know cousin and BF well enough to guess how they would feel?

I think it sounds great - and like Enid said, a treat. Can I come? (Or have the recipe?) :)

Take my advice with a grain of salt though - my FSIL is apparently the fussiest eater in Britain and has reduced me to pizza, cheesy pasta and 'normal chicken' (whatever that means!!). I had grand plans of ufn things to serve, but she's shot them down. (I asked her about food because she's 19 weeks pregnant and I thought it might be nice, but opened up a can of worms...)

I don't really follow directly the recipe, but this the basic idea. I tend to change up the spices or the veggies in there depending on what we have in the kitchen. I made this one with orange bell pepper instead of green and other tweeks like that. I also look at lentil burger recipes and substitute black beans because I find them to have a bit more flavor and a nicer texture.  I usually serve them with saut?ed mushrooms and onions, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, etc.

  • Woohooo! Problem solved! I had H text his cousin to see if it is okay :) veggie burgers it is!  :) Thanks for the input ladies and I think I will try the sweet potato fries if I can find sweet potatoes at the local store. mmmmmmmmmmm....
