how can some people be so carefree?

DH's cousin and his GF had their baby...They are in their early 20's he works pt at a store and she doesnt work anywhere because he didnt want her to work while being pg. They have NO money! and live with his parents. the baby is beyond the cutest thing i have ever seen and they are completly in love with him. I left the hospital last night begging DH to have a baby and although i know that we can just make it right now we should wait till we dont have the two car payments and other crappy bills.

How can they be so carefree about not having anything to give that baby. They love him so much but at some point they do require to have some money. I just keep telling myself that we are doing the responsible thing by waiting to have kids. But the other 1/2 of me is yelling to just jump in and do it!  Cant it be next spring yet so i can get KTFU?

ok i will put my big girl panties on now....

  • They probably think his parents will do all the paying.

I had 2 car payments and crappy bills and still had 1 and 2 kids.  Financially there is never a "right" time unless your a millionaire to have a kid.  You never know what will come up with your house, cars, jobs, etc.

  • lots of people with little money have children, and the kids are OK. you don't really need all the baby gear, and there are always less expensive options for what is necessary.

    just sayin' Stick out tongue

  • Having lots of money and being financially set, doesnt necessarily make you a good parent. As long as they will be good parents and work hard, thats all that matters.

Okay, this comes from a place of like so don't try to read more into it. Starting from right now, you need to stop concerning yourself with what other people have and/or do. I'm not saying that you aren't entitled to your opinions or feelings. What I am saying is that you need to do what is best for your family. Plain and simple.

i would have to agree with navy and everyone else...

i never thought i would be laid off and be having a baby.. i was always told that as a special ed teacher that my job was "safe". it wasn't in my plans. then we were told that both of my dh and my job were gone. we were still having the baby no matter what. thankfully he was saved. i have a large student loan payment, a mortgage, bills, 2 car payments. you never know when life is going to change. can't plan for everything. i am just thankful that we are better off than i thought we would be.  we make it work and thats all that matters.

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • I agree with ppl that they probably think that his parents will pay for everything.  DH and I have talked about having kids and it is just not financially possible right now, so I know how you feel.  I will feel better in the long run when I know we have financial stability and then have a child.

  • i am not saying that money is everything for a child but i came from a single parent house hold where my mom lived pay check to paycheck and it was not easy, she was stressed all the time and if i wanted to go someplace special or do extra things it could not be spur of the moment and there was often times that i couldnt do things because there wasnt the money for it. While on the other hand looking back i loved all the things we did do when i was little but i do not want my children to see us struggle ever week to pay the bills.

and margie- i have a much thicker skin then you think. it just irks me that when your 21 why do you expect your parents to pay for everything, at some point you need to grow up and get a JOB! and baby or not there is no reason why a mother cant work... and if you dont have two nickles to rub together why are you not looking to get a ft job or a 2nd part time which ever you could find.

  • When we decided to ttc, we had a car payment, mortgage and a ridiculous credit card bill.  We knew it was the right time for us and from the time we started trying, we put money away every week.  We weren't rolling in it, but were financially sound.  We got pregnant and were ecstatic.  I was a sah wifey and DH had a good job, we were set.  When I was 8 months pregnant, DH got laid off.  We had no clue it was coming so couldn't prepare for it.  For two months we ate at our savings.

I just want you to know that we are fine and LB wants for nothing.  She never did.  Somehow, it works out.   All I am trying to say is that you can't ever really prepare except by having some savings.  Like a pp said, you dont need all the fancy gear.  We did not use 1/3 of the stuff we got for LB.  Plus, having her is no where near as expensive as we had prepared for.

If you are ready and DH is ready, don't let finances get in your way, because you never know what will happen.  You could win the lotto tomorrow or (God forbid) be unemployed.  HTH!
