Elder care/ nursing homes
In the event that my grandma makes it long enough to leave the hospital, we will need to find a nursing home for her, as she has had a stroke and can't swallow or speak.
If anyone has any recommendations or good experiences, I'd appreciate your input. We are looking for something preferably in the memorial area, as most of my family is in cypress and Katy. In all likelihood she has very little time left, and we want the absolute best for her.
I would respectfully ask that you not talk about bad situations in detail here.
Thank you.
Re: Elder care/ nursing homes
Check The Forum. I know they have many levels of care and I have known several people who had grandparents there.

Prayers for your Grandma.
DH's aunt's dad is in a nursing facility and they have been really happy with it. His cousin (who I emailed to ask for the name) said they are really great and take great care of her grandpa.

It's on Westheimer in the Memorial-ish area.
This is where GMIL was for 7 years before she passed. All 10 of her children approved. But I think it's just for Alzeihmers care, so I don't know if that will really help you.
Praying for your family.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and used against you. My Blog
ah, looking at the site, they do Alzeihmers and Dementia care and assisted living care... So yeah, not going to be helpful, sorry.

My boss had her mother at The Hampton on Post Oak and then at the Forum, I don't think the Hampton offers skilled nursing which is what it sounds like your grandma would need. I believe that's why they moved her to The Forum (it's at I-10 and 610) it's very pricey but very very nice.
Once it was clear that her mother had very little time left (and was in no condition to use any of the "extras" offered by The Forum) they chose to move her to hospice care. Contact houstonhospice.org. Over all my boss was pleased with all three places though I think she had some issues with The Forum not following her directions about certain things. Her mother spent her final days in a hospice house in the Museum District and from what I heard it sounded lovely, her room was very sunny and opened onto a little garden.
I'm so sorry you have to deal with this, hugs.

It's not in your desired area, but we have had a great experience with Harvest Home in Tomball. My grandma started there last year, but was quickly moved over to their Alzheimer's care facility Inwood Crossing. Both facilities are linked together. Her care has been top notch, we like everyone who works there, and the director is wonderful. Both facilities provide level 4 nursing and hospice care.
Thank you all so much for the help.
She is seeming to be in much better spirits today, and seems to be coughing a bit, so she'll be re-evaluated on the swallowing business. If she can swallow and take meds orally, then our situation is much brighter-- she can have hospice care in her own home, which is our ideal circumstance.
For now, the plan is to have her in the "nursing home" at the hospital (hermann memorial city) for a week or so, and see how her body does.
Thank you so much for your prayers and advice.

I've done research on Alzheimer's/dimentia care facilities since August 2009, and we finally put Gma in this May (2011). While I have run the gamut there, I have not looked into skilled nursing (no memory care). I can attest that Brookdale and Hampton both appear GREAT!
I hope you and your family find what you are looking for.
