DOTD - the final edition
I am leaving for vacation tomorrow morning and this is the last card in the box -- a fitting end to a good run of sometimes thought-provoking, sometimes head-scratchingly odd questions. But, after all -- they were meant to be asked at a bar, at happy hour... so know your standards.

Me - Australia. LOVED my honeymoon there, loved the weather, loved the wine, and now my brother and his family are in Canberra so I could see them all the time. It's a beautfiul country with the most amazingly friendly people. Sign me up!

I've never really wanted to live outside the US. If I did, I'd probably pick Canada since we have a friend in Toronto who we don't see often enough. I've been to beautiful, warm countries but they just don't feel like home.

If this was a temporary move, I'd choose New Zealand (went there on my honeymoon and loved it) or somewhere in the UK.
I would love to live in the UK, specifically Edinburgh. Or Germany. I love the European lifestyle and life outlook!
Assuming finding a job were not an issue - somewhere in the Caribbean. I'm not sure specifically which country. I'd say Haiti if I could move into our cousin's beach house, wouldn't have to work, and could hurricane and earthquake proof the place! hahaha.
For a more "normal" life? hmmm. I'm not sure. Somewhere with a 1-2 month summer "holiday" as the norm.
I like the idea of Spain where you leave work for a 2+ hour lunch/siesta, and then eat dinner at like 10pm. I also like the idea of any other contry that allows a full year of maternity leave...or just paid maternity leave.
New Zealand (Auckland, to be specific). The country is like one giant Whole Foods :-)
Since I fully intend to live in several foreign countries, I'm more than OK with lots of other ones, too. I'd have an easier time deciding which countries I wouldn't live in.
I would only live outside the US if I was fabulously wealthy and could afford to fly home to see family and friends whenever I wanted to (preferably by private jet, lol).
But I'd be pretty darn happy in France or Italy. I love the culture of both countries and the food...oh the food. *sigh*
(I might also need a full time personal trainer, because eating there would make me LARGE.)

Since I don't like change, I'd probably move to Canada. I looovvveee Toronto.
But if I wasn't a wuss and didn't care to see my family that often, I might move to Scotland or something.

if this was a temporary (maybe a few years) move and i could afford to fly home (or fly family out) whenever i wanted, i'd move to south africa. the country is absolutely beautiful. i have several good friends from college who are south african and went home after school, plus my godmother lived there for many years and raved about johanesburg. it would definitely be a culture adjustment, but i'd welcome the experience.

studying/working abroad were some of the best experiences of my life and would absolutely love the opportunity to experience that again with DH. we are actually looking into options to that in the next few years.
my first choice would be london. i just feel at home there. i worked in london after college/before moving to nyc and was devastated about not being able to stay there. DH's first visit was with me and he fell in love with london too. if we could work there legally, we'd be there already. i'd miss our family & friends but as long as i have my partner in crime with me, wanderlust wins. and most everyone is on the east coast so a move there would be just a little further than if we moved to the west coast.
i'd also enjoy living in edinburgh, glasgow, florence, prague (though not sure i could learn czech very well . . .), and amsterdam, or even places i've never been like canada (montreal especially) or new zealand.
and if i could be fabulously wealthy, we'd have a flat in london and a vacation home in the tuscan countryside and the greek islands. and ditto bh on the the personal trainer to keep me in check with the food & wine!
actually, he wouldn't really be behind at all. the family i babysat for in college lived in scotland for nine years and their kids don't sound like they've spent a day on american soil. the two younger ones have softer accents now that they've been back in the states for 7 years but the two oldest still live/work in scotland so they sound as glaswegian as anyone born there.
Ooh an even better reason! Do you think he would call you "Mum"?

Spain, specifically Barcelona. I studied abroad there for a semester and loved it- the culture, architecture, beaches, language. I'd live there in a heartbeat, as long as I could find work and had the $ to fly back to the states on a semi-regular basis. I would finally be able to speak Spanish on a regular basis, though DH would have a lot to learn. I'd also love to learn more Catalan.

I have to pick one?! :-) I would not mind living on an island (for a short while)! I would have to say Germany, Italy or Switzerland.

Germany. Hands down. Born there, lived there with my family till I was four and have a second family over there in the Mosel region. And I have a strong love for all things Ikea so I'd definitely fit in.
If I weren't married and had a kid, I'd probably be an expat there now. It's one of my retirement goals - just trying to convince DH of that (with his thick southern accent)
