f/u to adding volunteering to resume - how's this look??

I've added my volunteer position to my current resume.  I hope that it will help make me a bit more marketable.

?

2011 ? Present     Animal Care and Protective Services, XXXXX, XX

                                    Volunteer

?

?       Photograph adoptable animals for the city?s website, flyers and Facebook to promote shelter and available animals

?       Evaluate dogs for Meet Your Match program sponsored by the ACPCA

?       Train volunteers to evaluate dogs for Meet Your Match program.

?       Communicate with potential adopters to ascertain what they are looking for in an animal and help match them to the right pet for their family

?       Present animals to potential adopters for meet and greet

?       Participate in adoption events on site and off to further help place animals in good homes

Does this sound okay? I may need to tweak the wording a bit.  Thoughts?

  • That seems rather extensive for a volunteer position, Are all those things skills relevant to jobs you're looking for?

  • I agree, it's a lot of info for a volunteer position. I would combine bullets 2 and 3, and also bullets 4 and 5 (or just get rid of 5 altogether). I also don't think you need the "on site and off" in the last bullet. Is there a specific thing you do at the adoption events? Something that sounds less vague than "participate?"

  • I'll work on combining some of the stuff and shortening it up a bit. Wasn't quite sure what was involved.

As far as relevance, in a round about way.  Much I want I did in the past involved written and oral communication with members, prospects and vendors.

  • I actually wouldn't treat it exactly like a regular job, therefore I'd eliminate all of the bullet points and say instead something like, "Active volunteer X hours per week with the pet adoption program, participating in relationship building activities and events with animals and prospective adoptive families."

The reason for this piece on your resume isn't to showcase skills or accomplishments in the same way you would a full time job, it's to tell them that while you're in transition, you're doing something to keep yourself busy.

This helps. I'll work on rewording it now.  Thanks.
  • A lot of good feedback already on keeping it more brief and keeping it to relevant/transferable skills.

If I were to come across something like that in a resume, I'd feel like they were just trying to take up more space on a resume for appearance purposes.

Sometimes people approach resumes like a "professional alibi"; they think they need to provide an accounting of all the things they do to prove they're actually busy at work and providing value.  That's kind of how yours reads for that section.

Simplifying what you do and why you do it to 2 bullets for a volunteer position that you've been in for less than a year will help that.

Also, though, not sure how to incorporate it into a resume, if I see "volunteer" I'm thinking that you probably do this one or two days a week or something. If you're doing it full time (30 hours a week, on a regular basis or more), you can state something like that, too.  That would give more "meat" to what you say are your responsibilities.  Other than that, it sounds more like a well-meaning and productive hobby than a real responsibility.

Good luck -- show us your next version, for sure!
