Talk to me about the GRE
I am taking mine next Friday. I hate tests and have never had good study skills. I am a little nervous.

When I took it (several years ago) I just bought the Kaplan prep book that came with the interactive CD. I used the same prep for the SAT when I was in HS.
Back then, the prep CD had several modes: "Im taking the test in 2 months", "Im taking the test next week", "I'm taking the test tomorrow". Since I started them months out, I started with the longer, more complete mode, then switched to the next week, then did the "its tomorrow" when it really was tomorrow.
I always had good grade but wasnt the best test taker. I definitely thought this prepared me better, I saw a HUGE improvement in my ACT/SAT score between the first time I took it and the time after I used the book. It really just sort of gives you some tools to break down questions, make better guesses when needed, dissect the reading sections (my worst part).

I am not a good test taker, at all.
I would recommend hydrating and bringing water to leave in your car for afterwards. I left the testing site in a foggy haze and needed water and didn't have any.

had to take it for sam. definitely get "gre for dummies".
i crammed for two weeks. the thing that helped most was the math review. it was available online, and about 70 pages, but it was worth it to print. the writing and composition parts were not too difficult.
i did the computer based one, which was nice. it gives you a preliminary score when you finish.
