Cloth Diaper Ladies: Couple questions

So I'm getting a little frustrated with the smell out of our diaper pail/bag in S's room.  We wash every other day but the urine is just potent.  I sprinkle some of the sprinkle stuff Jess sells and we have room deodarizer in there too but everytime I open that pail, I want to fall over!  I spray it down inside everytime we wash so any helpful hints.

2nd question:  I'm finally down to my last cup of detergent of Ecover wash and looking at possibly changing detergents.  What do you like?  I'm not against what I have but wondering if there is something better especially for the poop stains.

3rd question:  Anything I can do to enhance to sunning of the diapers?  Some of them are pretty bad.  Do the diapers need to be pretty wet?  Our washer spins water out of the items pretty well so wondering if I need to cut that short.

thanks in advance!

I think you just have a kid with potent pee.  I suppose it could be that your diapers aren't getting fully clean and are smelling that much quicker with each use.  Have you tried stripping them to test it?

We've had the best luck with Eco Sprout.  We have hard water and all formulas of RnG gave us stink issues.

I don't think so. I just leave mine out all day and move them if they need more direct sun.  Sometimes it takes a few rounds to get the really bad stains out.

  • Bac Out (for your RaR inserts etc), that should help.  Have you tried stripping also?  Kim from Rockin Green wrote up an awesome blog post on washing on the T2B blog for us, check that out.

RnG and Ecosprout will do the same thing for you for the same price.

Poop stains will be best addressed by sunning, oxyclean, and lemon juice when you sun.

  • I had that pee problem and it was because the inserts were not fully cleaned.  Do what K suggested and try stripping them.

You could also try Funk Rock (or something like that) from Rock'n Green.

  • Also, in Kim's blog post, I believe she mentions water heater temperature.  Your water heater should be set at 130 to get your diapers completely clean, anything less will not get everything out.

  • 1.) This is why I went from a pail to a wetbag. I wanted to throw up every time I opened that dang pail. I love my wetbags, and I will never go back to a pail.

2.) I used Tide. I love it. I rarely have staining.

3.) I try to sun every other week or so, but honestly my diapers rarely need it, so I basically do it just for drying purposes. When I do sun them, I just put them out straight from the wash. They seem to be damp enough.

** I swear everyone has a different experience. Holly and I have a lot of the same diapers, use the same detergent, and her diapers seem to have way more staining than mine.

See, and that is why I went to a pail liner, unzipping a wetbag- puke in a hurry.

  • 1. I have heard that the more air diapers get the less they stink - it seems counterintuitive, but have you tried leaving the lid up on your diaper pail?

    2. I ordered some Charlie's and am not sure I would recommend it. I had used Eco Sprout before but I wanted something that required less detergent per load. I feel like my diapers are clean, but not CLEAN. I also have staining issues with my RaR and not my FB, even after hours in the sun. I called RaR customer service this morning and found out that Charlie's doesn't have any enzymes to break down the fats in the poop. They prefer Tide (original), Gain, Ecover and one more that I can't remember for their diapers. She said that if they smell at all you may need to strip with blue dawn in the bathtub vs. in the washer.

    3. I have heard lemon juice will help remove stains in the sun but haven't tried it. I am amazed at how easily stains literally vanish from my fitteds, FB and BG aio's. My diapers are just damp when I put them out. I usually flip after a couple hours or as I notice they aren't in direct sun any more.

  • we use wetbags and feel like that helps a ton over a pail

we use eco sprout and do a super soak with it about every other weekend and so far no issues. I tried dawn a few times but i was much happier with the ecosprout

i use lemonjuice on the diapers and let them sun for a coupleof days. it takes a while but they look brand new after all is said and done.

    sorry no caps. 1ht

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you were only to use Ecover on Fitteds since it breaks down PUL. RaR's is actually suggesting this be used on their diapers?

I use Tide original and it works pretty well for us. Yes, I do get more staining but i am thinking it's due to the fact that J is still BF so her poop is more soft/squishy and not chunky turds that plop right off. I sun almost every time I wash because I hate the fact that they stain. A few sunning's and the stains are gone :)

  • Yep. They also list it in the FAQs on their website: http://www.rumparooz.com/faqs.php

Who knows. CD really seems to be all trial & error to determine what works.

  • Holly- we use the fabric softener not the detergent. There is a detergent as well.

  • I sent RARs customer service an email and they said not to use ecosprout.  I was using Ecover but will be switching to either Tide or Gain plus doing the stripping.  DH doesn't think they stink that bad but I'm going to try it and see if it helps.

    Thanks ladies!

RaR has a far different view than all other CD companies too so this may be different from diaper to diaper, FYI.

And I actually have asked them why they recommend what they recommend when other CD people state not to use those types of detergents.

It's a new recommendation from RaR and other manufacturers are sticking to what they recommend.  It's an interesting discussion.

  • All I mean by this is check your manufacturer recommendations or check with wherever you buy diapers (T2B, Kelly's Closet, etc) for the manufacturer recommendation :)
