Cloth diaper questions

Do any of you use cloth diapers? If so which ones do you use? (and which have you tried & not liked?)

Does your daycare use them? (our daycare said they are willing to try)

What made you choose cloth over disposable? How much more work is it?

(I'm just starting to research this & have been lurking on the CD board.)

Re: Cloth diaper questions

  • We use swaddlebees and blueberry pocket diapers. They fit Ana the best when she was a sumo-baby. She was very large so less bullk was key for us as well as larger leg openings. Because of her large thighs, and my laziness about wash, I also chose snaps over velcro.

We tried fuzzubunz pockets and also prefolds with covers. Prefolds were great but too bulky for my big baby. Fuzzibunz were awesome too but the leg openings weren't a good fit for Ana.

I did sposies with Katen so I'm not sure about daycare. Technically, for daycare they shouldn't be any harder than a regular diaper other than putting it in a webag instead of the garbage if you use a pocket or all in one diaper.

I chose cloth for the cost savings. We were spending $40/wk in diapers before K was potty trained. I'm a BAD cloth diaper person though because we still use sposies at night. I never found a diaper that worked personally for us keeping pee at bay and the smell. Additionally, Ana gets more rashes from her cloth than she does the sposies. Usually people say it's the other way around though, so we're weird. I do actually like the ease of sposies much better, but the little bit of extra work (laundry, scooping poo into the toilet, wetting the wipes) isn't enough to deter me from the great cost savings. I have a very lean stash so I wash daily and it's still working for us.

  • 1.  I use all pockets.  I have tried Bum Genius, Happy Heiny one size and sized, Fuzzi Bunz, Rumparooz, Thirsties Duo size 2 pocket, Swaddlebees.  We use almost all Rumparooz as they were our fav.

Our in home used them.  I took a pre-stuffed pocket and a wetbag to each one and showed them how easy to use them, and all they had to do was close up and stuff in the wetbag. Each day I took a reusable shopping bag with about 6-8 stuffed diapers and a wetbag.  She put the dirties in the wetbag, and each night I took the wetbag full of dirties home and the sack with clean.  I had enough to wash the night of the 2nd day, or morning of 3rd day.

The cost, and environmental factors.  Plus DS1 had severe skin sensitivities, so he could react badly to disposables sometimes.  I hated the idea of putting poop in the trash, and diapers that would take over 500 years to start to degrade.  Ick.  Now with a DS2, it's nice to only have to buy minimal disposables and save a ton of $$.  Really, really nice!  :)  Now if DS1 would just remember to use the toilet instead of his diaper it'd be awesome.

Work:  I wash about every 2-3 days.  It's more work right now, as I have 2 of them in diapers right now, but I don't usually mind.  For the most part I don't realize it's more work, as it's all we've ever done/known.

Check out Little Padded Seats, they have a CD 101 class.  You can also just look at all the stuff in their store.

  • We use(d) Bum Genius one-size 98% of the time and loved them, we experimented with thirsties and a few others but none worked as well for our boy with a long torso than BGs.

DS's daycare in NJ was willing to work with them (sending wet bags and the such) but IA isn't as amenable IME thus far though he wears more training pants/pull ups now anyway

We chose cloth over disposable because a) long term cost, b) better for his skin - wicks away moisture from skin (unless you use prefolds) which causes virtually no diaper rashes, and c) better for the environment - I didn't find it responsible for our family to put 1000s of diapers into a landfill which will be there 'forever'.

We will definitely use them for number 2 in the future and some of them from DS can be re-used. I'm a hard washer so 75% of them won't stand-up to the test for a future child.

  • Do any of you use cloth diapers? If so which ones do you use? (and which have you tried & not liked?)  We use Fuzzibunz and BumGenuis pockets.  I have some prefolds and others, but the FB and BG are by far our favorites.

Does your daycare use them? (our daycare said they are willing to try) Yep.  I usually pack 5 every day in a wet bag.  They throw the dirty diaper back in, so I do have to pull the inserts out at home, but it's not a big deal and I wouldn't expect them to do it for me.

What made you choose cloth over disposable? How much more work is it?  I just got sick of buying sposies and cloth is cute.  We still use sposies when I feel lazy.  I usually do diapers every night when I get home from work.  Since we have about 12, we don't have to stuff until the next day.

My only issue is that I think they reek like ammoina, esp in the morning.  It burns my nose hairs!  And I've stripped them, etc. but it seems like everyone else has no problem keeping them fresh.  I'll blame it on my HE front loading washer.

I have a HE front loader, and had an ammonia issue for a short while, due to a detergent issue.  Otherwise, I've been doing CD's for 3 years, and hardly any ammonia stink.  I ended up stripping everything, bleaching the inserts, and changing detergent.  I had been using a WAHM made product, but it wasn't cleaning the diapers well enough.  I had the same thing start to happen when we switched to Country Save powder as I wasn't sure how much to use so I started small...soon as I added more, no more stink.  And if I wash too many diapers with not enough soap, I can tell...  So you might add more detergent and an extra rinse.

  • We cd both babies.  My stash is shameful, I essentially have 3 full stashes Embarrassed

Reese was in prefolds until she was 3 months.  We then switched her to one sized pockets (mostly bum genius).  Then, I found the fitted and wool love and we have a stash of those, too.

With Grier, we used newborn fitteds until she fit into one sized.  Her stash was made up of mostly goodmamas.  I also had piddle poddles, mutts, scuttlebutts (now orange diaper company), sniklefritz and a few other brands.

For daycare, we use all pockets and all in ones.  My haute pockets have delaminated, so our stash is all bum genius pockets and elementals.  I did have some bg small aios for Grier, so I didn't have to wash every day.  Once Reese potty trained, Grier went was in the os exclusively.

At home, we use fitteds and wool.  I prefer this combo because everything is breathable.  My stash is all goodmamas and twinkie tush (tt are made a bumpie :))Our fitted/wool combo is bullet proof for nights and we have yet to have a leak with Grier. (we occassionally get leaks with Reese if we don't stuff the diaper just right. She's still not night potty trained).  We also have a few ai2s that I like for out and about, but they aren't nearly as absorbent as a fitted.

If you do decide to cd, and decide on os pockets or aios, they aren't going to fit right away.  Both of my girls were about 10lbs before I could get a decent fit on them.

I sold dh on cds by the cost savings, but I really haven't saved much money because I'm constantly buying, selling and trading to try new things.  I prefer cds over disposables because I would rather not have chemicals and paper on my baby's skin.  Plus, we are creating much less waste that will end up in the landfill.
