someone once told me to put a piece of clear tape on pieces I don't want my cats to tear at (the side of my couch a doorframe, etc.) and so far it has kept them from tearing at those places. also, we got them their own scratching posts/smalls cardboard pieces and keep them in various places around the house so they aren't tempted to use anything else for scratching. The litterbox isn't so bad when you think about the fact that you don't have to come home to walk the cat so it can go potty nor do you have to pick it up right after they go (Like when you walk a dog) and you can leave a cat for a weekend and it will be okay. So, it doesn't really affect your social life. I can keep going but you didn't ask for me to sell you on getting a cat so I'll hush

We have a scratching post plus 2 cardboard cat scratcher things that Bailey likes a lot. He just seems to like the rugs, too.
Yeah, they sell big sheets of clear tape that are meant to keep cats away from things you don't want them on. The problem is that our house is going on the market next week, and clear plastic tape isn't appealing to potential buyers. We use foil in places we don't want our cat, too, and that really works. Again, we have to take it down while our house is up for sale, unfortunately.
The litterbox doesn't bother me at all. I clean it every couple of days and it's no big deal.
The hair is annoying, but you get over it. And we restrict where our cat goes. He isn't allowed in the bedrooms and he is allowed on the couch only if he is in his little bed. That definitely helps control where there is hair.
