Listen to iPod (verb) - A socially acceptable way to be antisocial.
Is it just me? Sitting on the bus I always wonder if people are actually listening to their iPods or just pretending to so they don't haev to make eye contact or conversation with people. And other than the crazy people, have people on buses actually tried to make conversation with you?
As a regular customer of Metro and Sound Transit, I can definitely say YES. It's usually older people (like 40+, and are often old skool hippies) and the overzealous ADHD-type 20-somethings (who can't stand silence) who will try to start random convos on the bus. I always bring a book and read it, or take a nap. I hate random small talk with strangers.

on one of my bus adventures to see uwhusky, i sat next to a polite older gentleman who was discussing with me his marital troubles. he was asking me if it was okay to have relations with another woman if he wasn't getting any at home. he still wanted to be with his wife emotionally, just needed physical contact elsewhere. he tried to ask me if he should cheat, divorce his wife, or be miserable for the rest of his life. i told him it was his decision, and i couldn't make it for him.
i was reading when he sat down, but he wouldn't stop talking.
