I am currently part time doing full time work. I am also limited in the number of hours I can work in a calendar year.
I have been with the company for four years, starting with a super simple job of working in the call center. A few months after starting, I was "promoted" to working with more elite clientele. No pay increase, and actually a decrease in hours worked weekly. I earn nearly minimum wage. I took this job after searching for over a year and we desperately needed the cash. Upon hire, they said they promote from within, if I work hard and do a good job, I will be quickly moved up. Then that hiring manager had to suddenly retire, so I lost my biggest advocate.
During the next year or so after his retirement, several positions opened up that I qualified for. I did not get any of these positions. Reasons being I'm too valuable in my current position (fine, give me a raise, promote me within the department, and way to make me feel bad about working hard), time at the company (crap bc I was there longer than that candidate), I was better suited for a different position (um, I didn't get that one, that's why I applied for this one), I'm too good for the company and should look for someplace better (obviously based on the crap reasons I just gave and why don't you take advantage of my skills while im here?).
Only one position was filled by a female (pregnant) and several others weren't even posted, but the MEN who got them were told to keep it a secret that they were promoted. Bad idea because of some of my duties, they come up in a report I do based o. Full time employees, so it took me only a few minutes to figure it out.
I have desperately tried to find other jobs elsewhere. I suddenly find myself needed cash to pay for unexpected and necessary expenses. I don't currently have prospects waiting in the wings, trust me, it's not for lack of trying. I'm hoping to approach my current employer to ask for full-time status (if I had medical benefits, that would help me TREMENDOUSLY) or at least for a raise. My duties have expanded so much, that I can't always do all the projects asked of me because of the limits of hours I am allowed to work. I find that to be a solid reason for fulltime, but also my track record, willingness to work, the fact that I haven't had a raise at all except when min wage went up.
Other notes: on one interview for an internal position, I wore my nice black suit, and they said I look like I'm taking myself too seriously. Also, one position was given to an external male candidate, he is a peer now and I don't see why he was better than me. His degree and previous experience were irrelevant to the position. Other positions were created for friends of execs, as expected, and previously when I asked for a raise or fulltime, they said it wasn't in the budget. Also, if I ask for time off, they often say no bc they need me at work.
I know there is a lot of crazy stuff I have written, and perhaps some of it justifies a trip to the EEOC. But that is scary, and I don't know what else to do.I really just want to be fulltime for the cash. My schedule would still be very similar to where it is now, but I'd be able to do the work they want me to do without me saying no bc of their rules. How should I approach my supervisor or VP or HR about this?
