Staying at a Job You Don't Like

So, in July I started training for a PT job that will begin fully in Sept. when kids are set in school. (It's not quite tutoring, but similar.) My background is in Education so everyone assumed/assumes that it's right up my alley and I love it. I don't. I have to go today for like 2 hours and I have a pit in my stomach because I don't want to go. I don't feel I have had sufficient training and it is a "learn as you go" type of thing so I want to give it a fair shake, but I really dislike feeling this stressed about it.

How long would you stay at a job that may benefit you in some way down the line (not certain what that looks like), but really don't seem to like? We don't need the extra money, but that is nice for now too.

Re: Staying at a Job You Don't Like

  • I would give it 3 to 6 months.  At that point if you really dislike it and it looks like it won't open any other doors for you then start looking for something else and keep current job until you find what you want.

  • I know you are right. I am telling myself December. I just hate having this yucky feeling.

  • I think it depends on why you don't like it.  is the the job, the people, the hours, ethics. etc...
  • Right now you are stressed about the unknown.  You really don't know that you don't like it.  Try not to be so negative or you will end up hating it.

I wouldn't stay at a job that was making me physically ill but I also wouldn't leave until I had something lined up.

I just had an employee quit after less than 1 month.  I have a very negative opinion of her as a result.  If she is ever dumb enough to list me a reference I will be sure to highlight her dates of emplyment for whoever asks.

  • You should give it 3-6 months. But you already have a negative opinion about the job and that's going to impact your performance once you get there.
