What do you think?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122584386627599251.html?mod=WSJ_article_comments#articleTabs%3Darticle

I found this on SB, but I really really like it.  And naming a sewage plant after George W? Seriously?  Classless.

This is my favorite part from the article:

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Ps - the writer of article is NOT pro Bush.  He actually used to work for John Kerry.

Re: What do you think?

  • I completely agree.   However, I think this extends to the treatment of Obama and other public figures as well.

The American public, in my opinion, is completely out of control.  There is no dignity or respect for anyone or anything anymore.

It's disgusting and we are headed to a bad (worse?) place, in my opinion.

Yes, I agree.  Except, like someone mentioned on SB, Bush has crossed way more political lines than Obama has, IMHO.

Honestly, I don't give a rip about politics.  It's just not my bag.  However, I couldn't agree more with the above statement.

Not only have I noticed it within our own age group (20's and 30's), but I have noticed "adults" (people in 40's and 50's) feel like they are owed these things, but don't give them to anyone either.

Absolutely...but he was elected by the majority and we have to live with his choices.  That doesn't mean people should act the way they do.

I am a die hard Republican and I love W.  I just think the lack of respect is going to continue regardless of the leader/leader's choices ..because that is the way our society is these days.

Kids (overall) don't respect their parents, teachers, etc.  Why would they grow up and respect their political leaders?

One of my students posted something about bashing Bush and I posted a long rebuttal because it just wasn't completely true.  Ugh.  I do get tired of hearing all the bashing and I am tired of Bush being blamed now for what's going on three years after his presidency.  And, honestly, after all the Bush bashing, I'm not surprised that some are bashing Obama.  What's good for the goose is an old adage.  Not that that makes it right or anything....

I agree, and I think most of the hatred is brewed within the home.  Children see their parents actions, and will follow in their footsteps in some way.  Thank you for posting this because it is finally an article that is in touch with reality. It's not bashing one side or the other, but instead calls out the arrogance and ignorance of people. None of our problems can be blamed on a single person alone.  Politicians need to step aside and focus on the people of the country, IMO.

Whether Bush's decisions were right or wrong, that man had conviction and I feel he truly believed in what he was doing.  That's what I look for in a leader, and I hope others can see that "their way" will never be met 100%.  There has to be compromise and a realistic way of looking at things.

I'm glad this article had a great quote from him, "We have one country, one Constitution and one future that binds us. And when we come together and work together, there is no limit to the greatness of America."

Yes! Yes! YES!  He had a confidence about him.  I don't want a president to second guess themselves, to look weak, or feeble.  I want them to be strong in their convictions and stand by their decisions.  That's probably what I admire most about him.

How about a little respect among the political "leaders?"  That might be a good place to start.

Completely agree with this!  I'm tired of the name calling and constant ridicule of one another... I understand there are huge political differences but at least discuss the actual issues instead of just pointing fingers at each other.

  • I don't know that I have a lot to add that hasn't already been said.  I am very impressed with this article because he is saying to take emotion aside and look at the person and the presidency.  Once you do that Bush is not a bad person.  Full Disclosure: I think he is an amazing person who stood up for what HE thought was right for our country.

However, I think the root of why Americans are turning towards this slanderous, nasty, attitude is not just because of families.  A lot of it has to do with media and social networks.  No matter which side you are listening to, the media is sensationalists.  They will spout whatever they can to get you to listen over the commercial break, or click on the link to the article.  Whether it is Fox News, CNN, Rush Limbaugh, you are getting sensationalism.  After hearing that over and over, it starts to stick with you.

The second issue is the internet and social networks.  Now you have people under the cloak of their computer writing statements that aren't factually correct, spreading propaganda, and many times being blatantly rude because it is easier to do so when behind a computer than when in front of someones face.

Once you are continuously surrounded by these things, I think it skews your perspective.  It becomes a vicious cycle.

On a different note: I hadn't heard about the petition to name the sewage plant after GWB.  Even with everything I typed above, I am shocked people think that is appropriate.  With as much as I can't stand Obama, I would NEVER think that was ok.  Our President should be respected for the massive responsibility that they hold.

I think you made some great points.  I agree the media has way too much of a negative influence on people.  I could express some nasty feelings I have about it, but that would be driven off emotion so I won't go there. ;)
