SmartPhone Users

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker For two people in a marriage to live together day after day is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked. PersonalMilestone

Re: SmartPhone Users

  • Apparently the tracking feature can be disabled.

Honestly, if people are that worried, they shouldn't post pictures in public places.  I think the media WAY over-hypes stuff, not to mention the fact that they spend more time describing how to stalk someone than they do explaining how to avoid the issue.

  • Random side note:  The fact that the guy keeps saying "pic" instead of "picture" in the video makes me want to punch him in the nuts.  Way to use txt spk in news, douche.

I totally agree with the first comment listed under that Youtube video.  Way to show people step by step how to do this instead of talking about how to prevent it.  How many people actually know this exists and know how to do it before you show them on the news??

This is part of the reason why I don't use my Smartphone for all the extras that I could potentially use it for.  I never post from my phone, never take pictures with it, etc.

I also don't understand these parents that feel the need to constantly upload pictures of their children to FB.  (No offense to anyone.)  My SIL does this and upload pictures of her 5yo daughter in her bathing suit and all sorts of stuff.  I get that it's supposed to be innocent, but she also has 600 and something friends.  What are the odds that at least one of them has pedophilic tendencies?

Maybe I'm just paranoid, or maybe I'm too old school, but I just don't get it...

  • Rachel, I'm with you.  Obviously an actual stalker/kidnapper would be worse, but I'm also skeeved out by the thought of someone drooling over (or worse) my hypothetical kid's pictures.  So I'm sort of anti-posting pics, or at least having very strict privacy settings and not posting a ton.

  • I will admit that I do post a lot of pics of Baby Q on facebook - as any of you who are my fb friends know.  But:

1 - I have my privacy locked down tight.  Only my friends can see my pics.  Partly I did this b/c of K's ex-wife being a friend of a friend on fb (which I think is weird, but she ain't on my list so I can't say much) but also b/c I hate getting these random comments from people I don't know b/c they are friends with my friends and saw it in their feed or are just stalkers.

2 - B/c of the distance we live from my family, it's an easier way for my parents, sister, cousins to see how he's growing without me having to send emails all the time, and no one feels left out.

3 - I can't stop other people from posting pics of him without either coming off as a heinous b!tch or super-controlling.  SIL and especially K's cousin are post-whores and put tons of pics up without really considering this sort of stuff.  I have no idea what their privacy settings are and it's one of those battles that isn't worth the fallout.  So, I'm trying to be proactive - posting pics so hopefully they'll post less.  Not sure if it's working or if I'm just kidding myself.

  • God, Susie, you're such a bad mom! :-P

I think the big thing is just not posting them from cell phones if you can help it.  I don't think a lot of people realize the full capabilities of the technology and how to safe guard themselves against it.

And I think the pics you post of BabyQ are fine.  TBH, I would be more concerned about the older kids b/c they're easier targets for kidnapping, etc. b/c they are more likely to be around these places without their parents in the immediate vicinity since they can walk, play outside, etc.

The photos I really take issue with are ones like I was talking about above that SIL posts.  She posts (from her phone, so location IDed) pics of our niece in her bathing suit "being a little diva" and it's a frickin' 5yo in a bathing suit blowing kisses and posing like she's Kim Kardashian or something.  That's just asking for it, IMO.  (Not to mention, completely inappropriate if you ask me, but I digress... :-))

  • Susie, that sounds fine.  Like Rachel said, the whole location issue comes from posting from your phone.  Maybe baby pictures are different from little-kid pictures. Like, little girls in dance recital outfits that make them look like strippers.  WTH?
