I want to hug my sister

My poor sister just had to experience watching her little 5 year old boy get bullied and teased on the playground. He's autistic, so he recognizes that he's not being allowed a turn and that the kids are making fun of him but he doesn't understand why they're doing it. None of the parents heard what their kids were saying and if they saw it, they didn't care; my sister had to step in to tell the kids that they weren't being nice and that her son needed to have his turn.

She was so upset, though, that she ended up cutting their time short at the playground (including her daughter's time) and leaving after he had his turn on the activity. She is worried that outside of school-- where the teachers are really good about shutting down bullying and teasing-- her son is going to be defenseless. He doesn't have the vocabulary or comprehension to stand up for himself except to say "hey it's my turn, now" (and then get made fun of for saying that over and over again).

I just wanted to go over and kick the parents in the shins for not teaching their children how to share and take turns. My parents ALWAYS told us that it was our responsibility to stand up for kids who couldn't stand up for themselves.

My heart just breaks for my sister; I can't imagine watching your beautiful, sweet child be made fun of by a bunch of bullies and knowing that you can't be there to stop it every time...

Re: I want to hug my sister

  • That's so awful that your sister had to witness that. Kids can be horrible sometimes. :(

  • Ugh, the poor little dude. And your sister - I want to hug her too.

Those other parents seriously suck for letting their kids bully another child right in front of them.

  • Your poor sister!  I can't imagine having to witness that, and knowing that it will happen again.  Those other parents should have been paying more attention and stepping in to help your nephew has his turn.  It makes my blood boil that they provided tacit approval to the kids, regardless of whether they simply weren't paying attention or watched it happen.
  • The boys don't have autism or any disability, but are speech delayed... so while other 2 year olds can say "my turn" or most anything else... they can't and I have to watch them extra careful when we go and play with other kids because they have been taken advantage of by other older kids when they realize they won't say anything, just use the "my turn" sign... it is heart breaking and I hope your sister is able to teach her son how to respond in those situations (and working with a mostly non verbal autistic student, I know how hard this could be) I know as soon as the boys are old enough and can express themselves better I will be so much happier and will definitely be teaching them that younger, less able kids should get their fair share of turns and to be able to play collaboratively
