So... this year I've been given the responsibility to be the senior advisor (extra pay too!)... so that entails helping students be/get on track for graduation, making their senior memorable with activities, planning the grad ceremony and.... prom.
So here I am looking for event venues, checking out vendor rentals, set up, catering, spaces etc etc etc... flashbacks, lol.
So, I may ask you guys for your advice along the way.
First little bit of advice... one of the potential locales that is available and offers a 20% discount for non-profits is the natural history museum of los angeles... it looks kinda cool... what do you think:

Re: Event Planning - Again
I've always thought museums were an awesome special event venue. That place looks awesome!
Tara - my prom had hors d'oeuvres and things available even though most people went out to dinner beforehand. Around here you have to have some sort of food available at an event or people won't show up.

I see. Thanks for filling me in!
The museum is awesome! I would have loved to have my prom somewhere so cool!
Also, I've seen proms with or without food. My Jr. prom did not have it, Sr. prom did- whether you ate their or not, food was included in the price of the ticket. I second Bekka's hors d'oeuvres- and drinks like punch or "mocktails". Food is generally what keeps people hanging around.
We had a full dinner at my prom. It was basically a wedding, minus the bride and groom.
My only concern with a museum (because I'm thinking of the one in NYC) is that there are a lot of dark corners/twists and turns/multiple rooms. It might be easier to watch a group of high schoolers if you can stick them all in one ballroom.

Looks like a very cool place. As long as you could have enough chaperones and keep all the kids contained in one or two areas, that would be much more memorable than a ballroom.
Our prom was a full sit down dinner too. I kind of hated that part of the night...made it feel too banquet-y. We all wanted to be up and on the dance floor with our friends, not stuck at a table for a portion of the night.
LOVE it!!
But I agree with pp's...you need to keep them contained at that age!!! ha.
My prom had a full dinner too. I would have prefered apps when we got there and stations that I could go to if I wanted food.
Ooh, I've heard that they redid a bunch of exhibits there and it recently reopened! How cool! I wouldn't be surprised if they already offered security in the rental fee.
My brother had his at the auto museum in Hollywood. There are so many cool venues out here to choose from.
We did one a couple of years ago at the Peterson auto museum... very cool place....
We're meeting this week to decide.
