  not all of jersey. it's bergen county, and it's just retail. any business selling food or antiques/resale/thrift can be open. it's called blue laws.

  originally to observe the day of rest - making sure you went to church and spent time with family.

  at this point, it's maintained out of tradition.

  it's the "blue laws"  no clue what that actually means.  but i grew up in bergen county and lived there until i was 22.  its something they have to vote to keep every few years.  the shop owners always want it open, the residents always want it closed.  i lived not too far off rte 4 and also close to rte 17 and let me tell you- to get anywhere on a saturday b/c of the freakin mall traffic can be beyond horrendous.  that's why they are not open on sundays.  as a resident i thought it was a great idea.  the malls bring in so much out of state traffic.  however, they would also block off say the cosmetics aisles in the grocery stores, b/c those were considered non-essential retail goods but of course you can always food shop.  that part i found a bit ridiculous.
