mildew smell-laundry question

Hi everyone. My friend gave me a few boxes of maternity clothes to borrow, which is awesome. However, I don't know what she did to them, but they reek. I think its a mildew-y smell. So far, I've washed them twice with regular detergent (didn't work) and then washed in just vinegar (didn't work). Do you have suggestions? I really want to be able to use these clothes but I'm getting discouraged.

Re: mildew smell-laundry question

  • Try washing them on the warmest water possible for the fabric with detergent and borax, use vinegar during the rise cycle. Once washed, hang them in sun, it should get rid of the smell!

  • Wash, use normal detergent and a bit of bleach.  You can even put a little bleach in with colors, it won't mess the colors up if you don't use too much (maybe a Tbsp or 2).  Anytime I have a mildew issue (I'm not always very prompt with getting things out of the washer), a bit of bleach always fixes it.
  • I use baking soda in the wash, use ur detergent and that and it should freshen everything right up.
