XP: Travel Time Compensation Policies

Hi ladies, I usually post on WC, but had a question I thought would get responses over here too.  Does your company have a travel compensation policy?  Would you mind sharing the policy with me, the industry and the frequency of travel (weekly, monthly, including weekends, etc.)?

Thank you!

ETA: I meant travel time compensation policy (i.e. for X amount of time away from home, you receive Y in return), not the expenses themselves.

Re: XP: Travel Time Compensation Policies

  • Define travel compensation. Comp time, covering costs, etc...

  • I work for a Fortune 20 company. The ability to travel is a basic requirement of employment for most job roles, people don't get compensated for it beyond their normal salary. The only "compensation" for traveling is that the company covers our extra taxes if you work in another state longer than allowed without paying taxes there.
  • My company does not compensate for travel time, only pays for expenses.

  • Legally this varies based on Exempt vs. non-Exempt staff

  • FH's company pays mileage to the job site, secures the hotel room/rental vehicle (if needed), and pays a per diem rate to cover food ($38/day)

  • DH and I both work at a university and travel. He travels a ton, I travel a little.

We receive no comp time. The university covers the expenses related to travel (mileage, hotel, rental cars, food/per diem) but we receive no compensation for our time above and beyond our salary.

I guess I've never really thought that any would receive anything else. Does that happen? Hmm. In both of our lines of work, travel is just a part of the job and there's no other way about it.

He's a college coach so he travels for games with the team and by himself for recruiting. I work in college admissions.
